HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2011 NATIONAL REUNION

The 14th Annual West End High School National Reunion, hosted by the Metropolis Chapter, was held on June 24 – June 26 2011 at the Comfort Inn located at 3200 W. Broad Street, Richmond, VA.

Friday Night Social/Dance

Western/Cowboy was the suggested attire for the evening. Those dressed in the attire were scrutinized for the most authentic outfit. No cowboy boots automatically disqualified the contestants. The winners were none other than Glanzy Spain and his wife, Jean. The evening also included great food and dancing. As usually the line dances brought more to the floor as we dance to the music of the Booti Call, Cubic Shuffle, Cha-Cha Slide and Wobble

Saturday Memorial Luncheon

The luncheon memorialized those deceased members. The names each were called out and the National Officers lit a memorial candle.

Saturday Night Scholarship Banquet and Dance

The evening started with a delicious dinner. The speaker for the evening was Timothy Harris, a 2005 scholarship recipient.

Honoring the Class of 1961

Members of the class of 1961 received a plaque commemorating their 50th anniversary and posed for photo opportunities.

King and Queen

How it works: One goal of the Association is to provide scholarships to descendents of those who attended West End High School. Each year the three chapters engage in a friendly competition to see who raises the most money for scholarships. Each chapter selects 2 representatives as King and Queen and the representatives from the chapter that presents the most money at the banquet are crowned.

The chapter representatives for this year were:

Mecklenburg - Glanzy and Jean Spain

Metropolis - Sterling Sims, Sr. and Annie Pulliam

Richmond - George Lancaster and Linda McCullough

The Mecklenburg Chapter (the chapter by the lake) took the crowns and therefore, Glanzy and Jean will reign until next year’s reunion.

2011 Scholarship Recipients

This year the Association awarded twenty $1000 scholarships. Recipients and parents/guardians were invited to attend the banquet. Alice (Hardy) Miller a member of the Scholarship Committee (Richmond Chapter) presented the awards and the recipients and parents, guardians or other representative came forward to receive the Letters of Award. And They Danced the Night Away¦

The evening ended with dancing to a variety of music including “oldies but goodies” such as Stand by Me, Hit the Road Jack, Tossin’ and Turnin’ and Let’s Twist Again.

The evening ended with many well wishes.

Sunday Morning Worship Service
