NATURE OF WORK

The City is seeking a Sports Program Manager for our Parks & Recreation Department. We are seeking a high-energy individual with a passion for creating comprehensive sports programs for our community. This is responsible managerial work directing and overseeing athletic fields, recreation facility and

programs for the City. Work involves planning, coordinating, programming, and implementing activities and events, preparing program budgets, and supervising numerous staff, in compliance with rules, and regulations. This position is the City's liaison to community youth sport organizations.

SUPERVISION Employee works under the general direction of the Recreation & Operations Superintendent. Employee must have the ability to develop and implement a comprehensive recreation program and facility, handle interpersonal and disciplinary problems among employees and seasonal staff, handle program eligibility questions and problems; negotiate various contracts, manage staff, and oversee program budget. Work is reviewed through periodic meetings, review of reports and for compliance with policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK

Plans, coordinates, supervises, assigns, and implements year round youth and adult sport leagues, activities, and special events; prepares monthly and seasonal programming; coordinates services offered; plans and supervises preparation of meals and food service activities; oversees contracts with corporate, media sponsors, exhibitors, concessionaires and other food service providers. *Supervises administrative, seasonal, instructional, programming, and contractual staff; recruits, interviews and hires employees; trains staff; conducts performance evaluations; approves leave; makes recommendations for discipline; prepares and submits time sheets for payroll.

Manages scheduling of outdoor athletic facility during spring, summer and fall months; interviews and recommends for hiring seasonal contractual employees; oversees and monitors performance of staff and volunteer coaches.

Monitors registration and attendance of classes and programs; assesses feasibility and public interest; cancels classes and programs; submits periodic reports on programs and activities.

Prepares and proposes annual program budget; monitors budget; provides ongoing financial, activity, and attendance information and reports to supervisor; prepares purchase orders and requisitions for all events, supplies, and center needs; maintains personnel and administrative records and reports.

Develops and recommends policies and procedures concerning operation and programming of gymnasium and athletic facilities; evaluates and revises programs based on interest and attendance.

Negotiates contracts with schools, instructors, concessionaires, and other agencies providing program services; monitors contract compliance; documents expenditures and makes estimates; ensures proper dietary requirements are .

Handles member complaints and solves programming problems; negotiates with participants.

Serves on various committees, boards; makes presentations and speeches at meetings and other community events.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Workis primarily in an indoor office setting with occasional outdoor activity required. Work includes lifting and carrying office and program materials and supplies up to 50 pounds and moving tables, chairs and movable walls. Work includes attending meetings and conferences occasionally outside the City. May be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends and holidays for special

events. Climbing and belaying climbers on climbing wall may be required by the position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in recreation administration, sports management, adult learning or related field and 3-5 years progressively responsible experience in recreation programming including supervisory experience (and Certification as a Parks and Recreation Professional preferred); or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

Considerable knowledge of modern principles, methods, practices and equipment relating to public recreational programs.

Considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and standards relating to public recreation.

Considerable knowledge of safety standards and precautions for recreation programs and sports activities.

Knowledge of principles and practices of management and supervision.

Knowledge of City personnel rules, policies and procedures.

Demonstrated ability to coordinate, assign, train, supervise, coach, guide and evaluate the work of assigned staff.

Ability to develop and evaluate programs and services that meet basic and recreational needs of the community.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other employees, program participants, community groups, other agencies and the public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, community members, contractors, other agencies and the general public.

Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports and keep accurate records.

Ability to use a computer, applicable software programs and modern office equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.

Ability to obtain a CYSA (Certified Youth Sports Administrator)

Ability to obtain a CPRP (Certified Park and Recreation Professional)
