The search The Westerville City School District is seeking a highly qualified educational leader for the position of superintendent. The person selected for the position will succeed Dr. J. Daniel Good, who is retiring after serving the district for five years. Kathy LaSota, director of school board services, and Dr. Richard J. Caster, senior school board services consultant at the Ohio School Boards Association,

are assisting the board with the search.

The school district Serving a culturally and economically diverse 52-square-mile area in northeastern Franklin and southern Delaware counties, the Westerville City School District serves approximately 15,000 students and is the 11th-largest district in Ohio. The district operates 14 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, an Early Learning Center and an Academic Enrichment Center. For the 19th consecutive year, the Westerville City School District earned the "What Parents Want" in education designation from SchoolMatch. The class of 2012 earned more than $25 million in scholarship offers and, on average, more than 80% of Westerville City School District graduates pursue a postsecondary education at colleges and universities around the world.

Students in the Westerville City School District continue to meet or exceed state standards for Ohio Achievement Test scores and Ohio Graduation Test pass rates. The district offers academic coaches; Advanced Placement courses; a high school International Baccalaureate program; Able and Talented resource centers; Arts, Math/Science, and World Languages/Culture elementary magnet programs; peer mediation training; the EOS alternative program for at-risk students; service learning opportunities; active business partnerships; and specialized programs that meet the needs of 1,600 special needs students, 2,700 gifted students and 1,200 English-as-a-Second-Language students.

opportunities. The district promotes sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie on its athletic fields, the overarching philosophy being that these characterbuilding tools last a lifetime and contribute to students' future success.

The Westerville City School District is successful because of the ongoing collaboration among students, staff, administrators, parents and the community. The board of education recently created a Community Engagement Committee to establish connections and strengthen relationships across the district. The district enjoys a statewide reputation as an exemplary school district and, for the past three years, has earned an "Excellent with Distinction" designation from the Ohio Department of Education. Children come first in the Westerville City School District, and the district's number one priority remains improving student achievement.

The community Located just miles from the state capital of Columbus, the Westerville-area community is highly diverse and thriving. In 2007, the city of Westerville was named by CNN Money as one of the top 100 places to live in the United States, earning the top spot in Ohio at number 46. While the city of Westerville is home to approximately 35,000 residents, the school district's boundaries include a total of eight political jurisdictions and approximately 85,000 residents. Residents of the Westerville City School District value their high-performing schools and recently passed an operating levy to bring fiscal stability to the district through fiscal year 2017.

Westerville benefits from a nationally renowned public library that regularly ranks as one of the top five in the nation, and the community is home to Otterbein University, ranked annually by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the Midwest.

Westerville's thriving corporate community is home to many successful businesses, such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Cheryl's Cookies, Alliance Data, OhioHealth and St. Ann's Hospital. The Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce provides many services and resources to local businesses to help them grow and keep the local economy strong.

Recent highlights l The Office of Communications & Technology

was honored with the national "Sunny Award" for maintaining one of the most transparent government websites in the nation. l The Academic Enrichment Center earned an award for Outstanding Educational Facility Design in the Spring 2012 edition of Learning by Design, a National School Boards Association publication showcasing innovative educational design and construction projects. In addition, the Academic Enrichment Center and the district's Early Learning Center were chosen as two of the Outstanding Design Projects highlighted in that same issue. l The district's three high schools were identified by Newsweek magazine as among the top 1,600 high schools (6%) in the nation. l A district high school student won the seventh annual High School Student Scholarship Essay Contest, sponsored by the Dickens Project. l Two district high school students placed in the top 11 of the National Chemistry Olympiad examination. l Two of the three students chosen nationally to attend Materials Camp in Clermont-Ferrand, France, were from the Westerville City School District. l Approximately 100 students annually earn AP Scholar Awards; 14 students were named 2013 National Merit Commended Students and four were named National Merit Semifinalists. l The Westerville City School District recently earned its highest-ever Performance Index Score. l Eight of the top 50 inventions honored at the 17th annual Central Ohio Regional Invention Convention came from Westerville City School District students. l All four middle schools and 16 teachers received the governor's Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education.

l Blendon Middle School's Robotics Engineering team won the Innovation & Strategy Award at the FIRST/LEGO League Ohio State Championship.

l Three Westerville City School District high schools students won first place at the Ohio Regional ION Mini-Urban Challenge and qualified to compete in the 2011 National Robotics Competition in Washington, D.C.

l A Westerville South High School student finished second in the 2012 state Digital Media Production contest and competed at the National Business Professionals of America Competitive Events in Washington, D.C.
