MATH AND ENGLISH PLACEMENT VALUES

Summer 2011 through Spring 2012

Math Placement Test Scores and Course Eligibility

Students must have the proper placement in order to register for mathematics and statistics courses.  Students can establish their math placement by earning a C or better in an approved college or university mathematics or statistics transfer course equivalent to MAT101X (Beginning Algebra) or higher (including dual enrollment, AP, CLEP and IB) OR by taking the NAU ALEKS Mathematic Placement Test.

The NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test is designed to accurately measure students’ mathematics knowledge, and will indicate a specific math placement for each student.  It can place students into the following courses: MAT 102X, MAT 108, 114, 150, 119, 125, 131, 136, 226, or STA 270.  Students whose score is not high enough for placement into their desired mathematics or statistics course are encouraged to study and review on their own, with a tutor, or using the ALEKS Learning Module before testing again.

Students can take the NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test a maximum of three times.  NAU will cover the cost of the first test.  Students are responsible for paying the test fee for each additional attempt.  The test fee is paid directly to ALEKS/McGraw-Hill.

Please visit the Math Placement Website for more detailed information.

•         Most students who are admitted to NAU for Fall 2010 and later will need to take the NAU ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test in order to establish their math placement.

•         Students who were enrolled at NAU prior to Fall 2010 will be allowed to use their prior math placement information.

PLACE/MATH scores are converted from ACT, SAT, and/or ACCUPLACER tests.  These scores will only appear and be valid for students enrolled prior to Fall 2010.

ALEKS/MATHA and ALEKS/MATHB tests are no longer administered, but scores earned on those tests prior to Spring 2011 are still acceptable as mathematics placement.  Students with ALEKS/MATHA and/or ALEKS/MATHB test scores are not required to take the new test, ALEKS/MATHC.

ALEKS/MATHC test is the mathematics placement test that is currently being offered.

MAT 110 (College Algebra) is no longer offered at NAU, but can be transferred as a prerequisite to NAU from other institutions.  Please visit the Math Placement Website for more information about the courses for which MAT110 can serve as the prerequisite.
