Lesson Plan for 8/24 – Introduction/QuestionsEric SundinGoals: Generally, I want this to be an introduction to some of the topics that we’ll be discussing in class this year, which should put them on notice that we’re going to be discussing some controversial topics, but should also (if they’re anything like I was in high school and still am to this day) excite them More specifically, I want today to serve as a primer for how I’m going to teach this class, which will be heavy on class debate and discussion, as well as a Socratic-style dialogueTherefore, the “skill to be taught today” (and for the rest of the class) is the skill of being able to receive a question, quickly process your thoughts into articulable opinions, and then be able to quickly respond when I come back at you with another question, or if I say something, “Your colleague disagrees with you – how would you respond to their point?”Methodology and Timing:I hope to spend the first ten to fifteen minutes introducing myself and the class in general. I haven’t made a syllabus yet, so I’m not going to get very detailed with regard to grading and specific assignments, but I do want to convey my expectations for the course and my excitement for being able to teach the course specifically at ChinquapinThen, I hope to spend about five to ten minutes on introductions. I’m going to ask them to tell me their name, what they want to be when they “grow up,” and their favorite fictional characterThe rest of class will be spent going through the thought-provoking questions I typed up. MaterialsI will hand out to each student (and Mike, the coordinating teacher) a copy of the questions I typed up. For the record, I also emailed them to Dr. Henry before class just to make sure all of them were appropriate, as well as to kind of put Dr. Henry on notice regarding the kinds of discussions we’ll be having as a class this year. ................
