The destruction of their food sources habitats means less food for the endangered animals. For example, there is supposedly less than 700 mountain GORILLAS living in the wild today and there are only 50 amur LEOPARDS. Poaching and civil have both affected the number of GORILLAS. Amur LEOPARDS have been affected by poaching and fires. The number of TIGERS while still low has increased since 2010. There are less than 4000 of the different types of TIGERS left. Many of the beautiful animals were hunted for medicinal purposes and fashionable TIGER rugs.ELEPHANTS have also been hunted because for superficial reasons. Many poachers cut off ELEPHANT’s ivory tusks and sold them. Since the last century ELEPHANT’s numbers have decreased from 200,00 to only 35,000.POLAR BEARS have suffered destruction of habitat greatly leaving us with only 20,000 of them in the wild. Due to climate change and a lot of the ice melting, many POLAR BEARS are losing their homes. This also means the animals POLAR BEARS usually eat have moved on as they no longer have homes either. So as you now know there are many reasons for animals becoming ENDANGERED. Some of the main causes are habitat loss, poachers and the loss of food sources. All of these things ENDANGER the animals.1.5 Animal ContinentsExamples of animals to call out are below:Europe - Red squirrel, Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly, Cicada, Turtle doves, V-moth, Natter jack Toad…Asia - Bengal Tiger, Panda Bear, Amur Leopard, Sumatran Elephant, Orangutan, Indian Elephant, Snow leopard…Arctic & Antarctica - Polar Bear, Blue whale, caribou, narwhal, walrus, Penguin…Africa - Forest Elephant, Black Rhino, Mountain Gorilla, Lowland Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Wild dog…South America - Black Spider Monkey, Jaguar… 1.8 Pin Animals on the Map3213100165862000 Habitat description and Animal nameMOUNTAINOUS FOREST REGION, AFRICA GORILLAFOREST, RUSSIA AMUR LEOPARDARCTIC SEA ICE POLAR BEARSWAMPS, GRASSLAND AND RAINFORESTS, ASIABENGAL TIGERTROPICAL RAINFOREST, SOUTH-EAST ASIA ORANGUTANSAVANNAH AND FOREST, CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA BLACK RHINOGRASSY PLAINS AND OPEN WOODLANDS, AFRICA AFRICAN LIONMOUNTAINOUS REGIONS, CENTRAL CHINA PANDADENSE FOREST TO OPEN PLAINS, AFRICA (AFRICAN) FOREST ELEPHANTFOREST AND GRASSLAND, ASIAINDIAN ELEPHANT Correct animals-places to pinAsian Elephant - IndiaAmur leopard Russian far east and north-east chinaAfrican Elephant – Zimbabwe. INCREASING AWARENESS3.2 Life in Captivity – Advantages and DisadvantagesAdvantagesThe zoo is a great place to learn about animals. If kids don't see animals up close like they do at the zoo, they won't like them, appreciate them or want to help them.Zoos help animals make babies (called "breeding") so they won't become extinct.Zoos take good care of animals. When animals get hurt or sick, an animal doctor called a vet makes them better straight away. In the wild, sick animals would die.Animals are safe in zoos. They won't starve or be killed by other animals.DisadvantagesZoos don't teach us much about animals because the animals there don't act the way they would in the forest, jungle or ocean, where they belong. We can learn more about animals by reading books or watching wildlife programmes on TV.Zoos that help animals breed just keep the babies or sell them. If they cared about stopping animals from becoming extinct, they would set the babies free in the wild.Animals are not happy in zoos. They want to be free to walk, run, fly, climb, hunt and have families. They don't want their babies to be taken away from them and put in a different cage or sold to a different zoo. They get angry and frustrated because they cannot leave the zoo, which makes them do strange things like pace up and down, lick the bars of their cages, rock back and forth and bob their heads. Scientists know that these things mean that the animals are very unhappy. When a zoo doesn't want an animal anymore, the animal gets killed or sold to another zoo and might have to travel far away in a lorry or aeroplane.3.5.1 Puppet Show InstructionsInstructions for puppetPrint out some of the animals from the resource pack and the poacherCut them out neatly and take time to colour them inStick your finished picture to your stick/straw with the stick/straw coming out from the top of the animalYou may want to make additional charactersInstructions for puppet theatreYou will also need to draw some scenery on A4 sheets of paper such as forest, grasslands etc.Cut a large hole along the side of the shoe box so that your puppet can enter its stage. You should also cut a large viewing rectangle on the front of the box. Younger girls may need help with this. It should look similar to the box below. Print off the stage frame in the resource pack and cut it out then colour in When it’s ready stick it to the front stage area of your boxWhen all the puppets are made and the stages have been set ask the girls to come up with their stories raising awareness of the issues endangering animals.During the show you may wish to dim the lights of your meeting area and have the girls use torches as spotlights.3.5.2 Puppet Show Templates left-44005500-15430501162050003.6 Song LyricsPenguin SongHave you ever seen a penguin come to tea? When you look at me a penguin you will see!PENGUINS ATTENTION! You cannot begin drawing any other part of your panda until you have a body. You must roll a 5 for a head. You cannot draw ears, eyes or a mouth until you have a head. You must roll a 4 for a muzzleYou must roll a 3 for each earYou must roll a 2 for each leg and armYou must roll a one for each eye and a mouthADDITIONAL GAMESEndangered Animal CornersThis game is very simple and easy. Label each corner of the room after an endangered animal. Ask the girls to dance/run around the meeting area while some music plays or until you yell ‘Hunter’s coming’. After this they must run to a corner and stay in it. A leader or a responsible girl must be facing the wall with their eyes closed while the other girls choose their corner. Once they are in they ae stuck in their corner the leader facing the wall must shout out a corner at random. All the girls in that corner are then out. Repeat these steps until there are only a few girls left, at which point you may wish to have less corners in order to more easily put girls out.Endangered laddersThis game is played like Chinese ladders. Each girl must have a partner who they will sit directly across from with their legs straight out so that their feet are touching. Overall the pairs girls should fill out the meeting place in a line with a gap between each pair. Once positioned the girls should look like a ladder. Each pair is given an endangered animal name. When a leader calls their name the girls must run up their ladder to the end (touch a wall if there is one), and then run down their opposing outsides before coming to the bottom of the ladder and racing to their place. To make it more competitive, have the left sided girls be one team and the right sided be another. A leader will need to pay attention to see which side wins each race in order to tally up their scores. For a bit more fun, you could have the girls make their animals race or do an action whilst they race. The tiger is big – circle sit down gameThis game is played like the moon is round. The first person will say: “The tiger is big, it has stripes, claws and it is endangered.” They will do the following actions when they say this: big = arms spread wide, stripes = they draw stripes on themselves using their finger, claws = they curl their fingers and hold their hands up, endangered = they put their hands on either side of their face and make a shocked expression. All the girls must be told to watch the first girl and then going round the circle they must one by one repeat her actions exactly. However, the girl should have done some subtle or unsubtle movement at the end of saying the phrase, from crossing her arms to sticking her tongue out. In order to copy the first girl correctly the rest of the girls must also do this final action.Animals and places – circle sit down gameA girl must say “I’m an animal and I’m from place”. The first letter of the animal should correspond to the first letter of the girl’s forename. The first letter of the place should correspond to the first letter of the girl’s surname. For example, if the initials were TA then a girl might say “I’m a Tiger and I’m from Asia.”To make this game easier you may only say “I’m an animal”.To make this game harder you should not tell the girls that animal and place must correspond with their initials. Instead, you would go first giving a correct example and then ask the girls to say the phrase “I’m an animal I’m from place.” You would then tell them if they were right or wrong and see how long it takes for them to catch on.What animal am I?You will need: Animal pictures and safety pins or sticky labels and pens.Pin a picture of an on the back of one of the group. Do not show it to her turn the person so that the rest of the group can see what animal they are. The chosen person must ask questions about what animal they are. The group may only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’.EXTRA LINKS AND ACTIVITES ARKive Education - Fun stuffBBC Nature: AnimalsAnimal Planet DiscoveryAnimals on National GeographicWhale and Dolphin Conservation Society ................
