Photosynthesis and Cellular respiration Cut and Paste
Background: All living organisms must have energy to survive. Energy is needed by all cells to carry out the necessary biochemical reactions that maintain homeostasis within an organism. The Processes by which living things gain and use energy are called photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In photosynthesis, plants trap the sun’s energy and convert it to chemical energy (a.k.a. carbohydrates, or sugars). The plants then use the carbohydrates as a fuel source to run all cellular activities. Animals must convert the food they consume into a usable energy source- ATP. Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are interconnected chemical cycles. The byproducts of one reaction are used as the “starting ingredients” for the other reaction.
Procedure:
1) Color the illustrations the following colors:
ATP- Red Water- blue
Oxygen- purple Carbon Dioxide- pink
Sun- Yellow Food- dark green
Chloroplast- light green Mitochondria- orange
Glucose - brown
2) Cut out weigh picture from the materials sheet
3) Read through the steps of cellular respiration and photosynthesis listed in data table 1 (each step is represented by a picture)
4) Glue the correct picture to the correct space provided on the diagram sheet, according to the steps in Data table 1. Cut and paste the diagram into your booklet.
5) Answer the conclusion questions in your booklet on the page assigned.
Data Table 1:
1) The sun is the ultimate source of energy for all living organisms.
2) Chloroplasts in the leaves of plants trap the sun’s energy.
3) Plants use the suns energy to split a water molecule that the plant pulled up from the soil into hydrogen and oxygen.
4) Hydrogen and oxygen from (a) water are combined with the elements from (b) carbon dioxide to form a (c) carbohydrate, or glucose.
5) Plants give off oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis
6) Animals take in (a) food and (b) oxygen from the air. Once in the body, the food is broken down into (c) glucose molecules.
7) Through a series of reactions, in the presence of oxygen, (a) glucose is transformed into (b) ATP. These reactions include glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain, and occur in the cytoplasm and (c) mitochondria of the cells.
8) Byproducts of cellular respiration include (a) water and (b) carbon dioxide, which are released back into the atmosphere to be used again by plants.
