It was so rewarding to work with the Veteran population and be able to serve those who served us. Residency Project: Improving feasibility of CPS deprescribing visits utilizing the VIONE tool Why the Madison VA?: I have always wanted to be a part of the Madison VA because of the enthusiasm and culture of the pharmacy department, being able to build relationships with the most deserving patient population, working at the top of my license in an ambulatory care setting, and the numerous teaching opportunities at the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy. Hobbies: I love spending time outside walking, hiking, and biking. I am also interested in photography. Why the Madison VA?: One of the things that attracted me the Madison VA was how kind and welcoming everyone I met was. Also, everyone I talked with was extremely passionate and happy about the work they do and the opportunity to serve the veteran population. One of the things I am most excited about for the coming year is being able to grow my knowledge in many of the different clinics that the Madison VA has to offer while being able to serve the Veteran population. Pharmacy school: UW-Madison School of Pharmacy Career interests: Pain and palliative care, critical care, oncology Residency Project: Evaluation of Buprenorphine Utilization for Opioid Use Disorder in the Emergency Department Why the Madison VA?: The inclusive culture at the Madison VA is absolutely incredible. As a pharmacy student, I completed the majority of my APPE rotations here and it was really exciting to see the amount of involvement pharmacists have in patient care through their broad scope of practice and ability to practice at the top of their licenses. On top of that, the preceptors at the Madison VA genuinely have a passion for teaching and foster such a positive learning environment. It is truly an honor to be able to provide care to Veterans and I am so excited to be a part of this program and serve those who served us! Hobbies: I enjoy running, biking, canoeing, baking, and cheering on my favorite Wisconsin sports teams! Skaggs School of Pharmacy Career interests: Primary care, heart failure, diabetes Residency Project: Evaluation of clinical pharmacy specialist performing comprehensive medication management in a VA transplant program Why the Madison VA?: So many reasons! I had fantastic ambulatory care APPE rotations during my 4th year of pharmacy school that lead me to pursuing VA hospitals. I was extremely excited when I found the Madison VA and learned that I could do a full year in ambulatory care as a PGY-1 resident. When I interviewed here it was undeniable that I would be learning from the best and that this is where I needed train. I love being able to give back to veterans who have given so much to us. I was able to complete an internship at the Madison VA during pharmacy school, and I loved the work culture within the pharmacy department and the hospital as a whole. Everybody goes above and beyond to serve the Veterans and provide high quality and coordinated care. Of course, an added bonus is the pharmacists' extensive scope of practice and the strong trust that others have in the pharmacy team. This was my first glimpse into the incredible scope of practice pharmacists have here, and the impact they can make in Veterans' lives. After then completing an APPE rotation in ambulatory care at the Madison VA, it was clear that the culture and practice model for pharmacists here is unmatched. I grew more and more passionate about ambulatory care with every day on rotation, and I quickly learned that this was the place I was meant to be for residency! The work culture at the VA is absolutely incredible. Everyone is extremely supportive of one another and genuinely tries to lift their colleagues up and help them succeed. Not to mention, serving Veterans is an honor, and it's a great feeling to know that the patients we serve appreciate and value the services we offer. Also, the scope of practice and the expansive role pharmacists are able to take on in the interprofessional health care team reassured me that every day at the Madison VA we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our patients' lives. And that seemed like a pretty great place to work! PGY-1 Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration Resident Pharmacy school: Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy Career interests: Advancement of Ambulatory care services, specialty pharmacy, medication safety, clinical management, and most importantly advocating for the pharmacy profession Residency Project: I will be working on a research project on health equity using predefined factors in our VA facility. Why the Madison VA? The Madison VA felt like home to me during my residency interview. After my interview on that faithful day, I was very convinced I wanted to be part of this family. The Madison VA residency program offers numerous opportunities that align closely with my career goals. The extensive leadership experience in addition to the program's dedication to the advancement of pharmacy research and expansion of clinical knowledge amongst its residents further solidified my decision. Here, I will have the opportunity to sharpen my clinical skills as well as learn the ropes of becoming a leader in a health system. Ultimately, it was the people, everyone was so welcoming and there was a sense of family from the very start. Coming from a family of Vets, I wanted to show my appreciation and serve them as they have so selflessly served us! Next, I wanted to complete a residency at a facility that valued pharmacy, and it's safe to say that the Madison VA is THE place to be for this. The scope of practice pharmacists have and the role they play in direct patient care is an experience unlike anything I have had thus far, and it really ensures that Veterans get timely (and amazing!) care. You can truly feel the support not only from your co-residents, but every preceptor as well. We are truly a team here!
