The Odyssey: Books 1-4: Graffiti Quiz

The Book Thief Graffiti Quiz

1. Draw a symbol that represents an important concept from pgs 1-350. Explain your symbol in one or two sentences. ex: “This _________ represents _________________ because….”

2. Map a timeline that has at least 10 events in chronological order.

3. Write a paragraph that analyzes the following literary elements of The Book Thief: theme, point of view, characterization, setting, and plot. An answer that is merely summary does not count. Examples of analysis address the following questions: Why is it that way and not another way? Why is it important?

4. Find 5 examples of figurative language throughout the book. Write the sentences and their page numbers on the wall. Label each type.

5. Refer to our vocabulary words. Use legos to break down 3 words. Below each lego, write the part of speech and language root. Then draw a mnemonic for each word that will help you memorize the definition. Do not write the definition on the wall.

Finally analyze the use of 1 word as it is used in the book. Describe how the word evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone.

Ex: Over Manifi ed

6. DRAW a scene that actually happened in the book. No matter how poor your artistic skills are, your image must include symbolic details from the text. Next, draw a scene that is not described in text. For example, draw a passage that represents Liesel’s life before the train.

7. Analyze how a complex character (e.g., someone who has multiple or conflicting motivations) develops over the course of the text, interacts with other characters, and advances the plot or develop the theme. You may cite page numbers if you feel it’s necessary. Your answer should be about a paragraph long.

8. Explain the important shift in Part 6, specifically the section titled “Death’s Diary”.

9. In exactly 100 words, summarize Parts 1-6.

10. Cite your name at the bottom of your quiz in MLA format: Last Name, First Name. Title of Assignment. City, State Abbreviation: Teacher’s Name, year.

ex: Brown, John. The Book Thief Graffiti Quiz. Gilbert, AZ. Buzan: 2014.

If you finish early, use the remaining class time to read ahead.
