Honors English I Quiz Activity:
“The Interlopers” One-Pager

DIRECTIONS: Using a blank sheet of paper, visually respond to / summarize / analyze “The Interlopers.” To do this assignment, your representation must include
the following elements:
1. Your one-pager must have TWO OR MORE EXCERPTS from the reading. In other words, you must directly quote at least two sentences from your assigned reading. Choose these sentences carefully, though. Your sentences should, in one way or another, be important or represent a literary concept (character, conflict, setting, symbolism, theme, mood, tone, etc.) You will be expected to explain how your quotes represent either a major character, conflict, setting, symbol, theme, mood, or tone.
2. Your one-pager must have A GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION. This can be a drawing, magazine/newspaper picture, a computer graphic, etc. The important thing is that your graphic representation MUST relate to the quotes you use from the story. Therefore, your visual representation must represent a major character, conflict, setting, symbol, theme, mood, or tone. ALSO, YOUR VISUAL REPRESENTATION MUST BE LARGE ENOUGH TO TAKE UP AT LEAST A QUARTER OF THE PAGE. IF POSSIBLE, ADD COLOR TO YOUR VISUAL.COLOR MAKES THINGS STAND OUT.
3. Your one-pager must include a PERSONAL WRITTEN RESPONSE TO YOUR ASSIGNED READING. This written response can be a comment, interpretation, evaluation, opinion, summary, etc. Your written response must be at least 3 – 5 sentences long.
4. Your one-pager must also include at least one QUESTION that you create based on the reading. Also, you must at least provide a possible answer to your question.
5. Your one-pager MUST FILL UP YOUR ENTIRE PAGE. Do not leave a lot of blank space on your work. Fill it up with art and information! YOUR ONE-PAGER MUST CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE EFFORT AND KNOWLEDGE. YOU WILL BE GRADED BASED ON THE QUALITY OF WORK YOU TURN IN.
This activity will be part of your English I student portfolio, so I expect it to demonstrate your best possible effort and abilities. We will
begin this in class, but if you don’t finish, you can finish it at home for homework. Since this is a somewhat time-consuming activity, I will
count this as a QUIZ GRADE. Take it seriously. Let me know if you need help or have questions.
ONE-PAGER EXAMPLE
Lord of the Flies: CHAPTER 2
"We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. "
"Have you got any matches?”
RESPONSE / SUMMARY: In chapter 2, the boys decide that they must have some type of order on the island, so they set up some basic rules to follow.
For example, whoever has the conch speaks. Despite this order, many of the boys get scared because they realize they may be stuck on the island for
a while. In an attempt to get rescued, the boys build a signal fire that, ultimately, burns out of control. While fire is very important for their
survival, it is also something that is very difficult to control once they create it. The fire, in many ways, is a symbol of the boy’s created
government; like the fire, they can’t control their sense of order and rules.
Question: In what ways is the out-of-control fire an example of FORESHADOWING?
Answer: The fire burns out of control and destroys part of the island; it is a destructive force. The boys, like the fire, will run out of control and become a destructive force towards each other.
