o Textbook – We will be using a Geometry Textbook by Elayn Martin-Gay. Students will receive a practice workbook and access to an online edition of the book. They will have access to the physical textbook in class.

Suggested extracurricular activity: Mu Alpha Theta is our math honor society. Doral team is ranked 6th in the nation. I will be assisting this year trying to get our students ready for math competitions. The members do extra math practice, community service, some tutoring and usually improve their math skills substantially. You may read more about the National Mu Alpha Theta organization at .

Grading Criteria

|LETTER |NUMERICAL |VERBAL INTERPRETATION |GRADE |

|GRADE |VALUE | |POINT VALUE |

|A |100% - 90% |Outstanding progress |4 |

|B  |89% - 80% |Above average progress |3 |

|C   |79% - 70% |Average progress |2 |

|D   |69% - 60% |Lowest acceptable progress |1 |

|F   |59% - 0% |Failure |0 |

Homework and Projects

o Homework is usually assigned daily and it is due by next class, unless otherwise specified.

o Homework may or may not be posted on the school’s website, but it will be assigned during class.

o Homework that is attempted will not receive a grade of zero. It is important to try the work so I can see where help is needed. Students must show work to receive credit.

o This year students may have an opportunity to work with Khan Academy assignments as well (Considered optional quiz grade each quarter)

o Projects using MyMathLab, weekly online assignments due on Thursday by 11:59 pm with assigned dates and graded based on accuracy. Late work will result in 50% deduction of the student final score. Work not completed before the end of the quarter will result in a “Z” with no changes the following academic period.

Tests and Quizzes

o Tests and Quizzes must be completed following all instructions to receive full credit. All work must be shown, including complete sentences when required.

o Any student absent on a test day must have an excused absence or will automatically receive a “z” for that test grade. If the absence is excused, I will leave the “z” in the gradebook until the students makes up the test. Students must make up the test within 5 calendar days of returning to school.

o Make-up tests will be administered before or after school, by appointment. It is the student’s responsibility to request any test or make-up work upon re-joining the class.

o The use of a cell phone, smartwatch, or any other personal electronic device during a test will result in the automatic invalidation of the test, and an automatic grade of zero.

o Materials will not be provided during any test. All students are responsible to bring their own materials. Students failing to write their name on a test will receive a zero on that assessment.

o

End of Course State Exam:

As per the Florida Department of Education, this school year all Geometry students must take an End Of Course Exam. The exam will count as 30% of the student’s final grade. Also, the score on the EOC exam can raise or lower a student’s final grade.

Academic Dishonesty:

Students are expected to be honest and ethical in all their academic work.  Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

o Cheating – use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids

o Fabrication – falsification or invention of any information

o Assisting -  helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty

o Tampering – altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents

o Plagiarism – representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.

Complete or partial academic dishonesty will immediately result in a grade of zero.

Absences

o Due to our block schedule, an absence to a block-schedule class is equivalent to two absences. It is very important that students make every attempt to be present for all classes. An absent student is responsible to obtain the information/topic covered during their absence.

o An absent student will be held responsible for obtaining all make-up work. Being absent from class may hinder a student’s academic progress. If possible, don’t miss class at all.

o Students missing class for extracurricular activities are not exempt from assigned work deadlines. An absent student participating on an extracurricular activity is responsible for any assigned material, and must request make-up work/test upon returning to class.

o As stated in the Parent Handbook: “Teachers are required to provide students with make-up assignments once the absence has been excused; however, it is the responsibility of the student to request the assignments from the teacher(s).”

o It is the student’s responsibility to inform the teacher when the excuse for an absence has been turned in.

Tardies:

In an effort to minimize the disruptions in class caused by tardy students, the administration has set the following rules:

o Students tardy to their first period, or caught on a Tardy Hall Sweep during the day, will not be allowed into the classroom, will receive an unexcused absence for that period, and will not be allowed to make up the day’s work.

o Students tardy to a class without a MDCPS official hall pass may receive a detention, at the teacher’s discretion.

o Students will be assigned to detention for every tardy after the second unexcused tardy. In the event that a student is tardy to a class without a MDCPS official hall pass on a test day, the student will not be given extra time to complete the test.

All students must comply with every requirement of the Doral Academy Virtual Learning Code of Conduct (Document attached in School Website Teacher’s page). • First week of the school year students will be asked to create an account for one or more of the following websites: Edmodo, Google classroom, USATestprep. Through these applications, students will receive instructions for submitting any assignments, including assessments, allowing teachers to check and grade their work. Any assignment not submitted or submitted late will result in a Z grade.

Covid19 classroom Guidelines

• Doral Academy is following all guidelines from CDC, Federal, and Local Governments; in addition to those recommendations, teacher and maintenance staff will be cleaning and disinfecting classrooms in order to avoid the spread of the virus.

• Hand sanitizer, tissues, disinfecting wipes and spray will be available in the classroom (105-A). It is mandatory that students wear properly face mask in campus and highly recommended to have with them, if possible, their own hand sanitizer and small package of the tissues. Students can wear face shields and gloves. It is recommended that student have an extra mask with them in case it is needed.

• Gloves will be asked to be removed during testing time

Note to parents:

It is my goal that all my students are successful in their math course. I will assist all students in any way I can. However, I alone cannot ensure your child’s success. Work fidelity or honesty is vital and necessary to ensuring that each student has learned the necessary material for not only this course but also for the foundations of future courses, not limited to mathematics. It is of utmost importance that your child attends school, completes homework daily, and turns in all assigned work in a timely manner. I urge you to emphasize to them that, ultimately, the responsibility for their learning is theirs.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any concerns. If you need to contact me I can be reached at my e-mail, mbellas@ (this is always the best way to reach me). You may also leave a message for at the school’s main number 305 591-0020.
