1. How is an iceberg a metaphor for culture? Or, How is an onion a metaphor for culture?

An iceberg is a metaphor for culture because not all of culture can be seen just by watching it. To fully understand a culture you have to go deep below the surface to experience the values, beliefs and attitudes.

An onion is a metaphor for culture because like an onion culture has a lot of layers. At the heart of culture are it’s values and as we move outward layer by layer we can see how each layer is influenced by the layer before it. Values influencing beliefs which influences our systems which influences the things we make and hold dear.

2. What are the characteristics of culture?

Culture is dynamic, elastic, adaptive, shared, learned, and integrated.

3. How is culture dynamic?

Culture is dynamic because it is always changing. Either within itself, things are changing or through cultural diffusion new ideas are being introduced and spread from one culture/society to another.

4. How is culture elastic?

Cultural components can be stretched to meet an individual’s own unique personality.

1. What is cultural adaptation?

patterns of behavior that enable a culture to cope with its surroundings or when an individual modifies his/her customs to fit in to a particular culture

2. What are humans adapting to?

They are adapting to their natural environments.

3. Which cultural components are most likely going to be adapted?

Housing, clothing, food are the most likely to be adapted, but other cultural components will be adapted too.

4. How is the ger (the Mongolian home) an example of a cultural adaptation?

The ger is an example of a cultural adaptation because it has been designed to deal with the elements of life in Mongolia. Windy, extreme hot and cold, and a nomadic lifestyle.

A natural landscape is an environment that is still in its original condition. A cultural landscape is a natural landscape that has been modified by humans.

The cultural landscape includes buildings, agricultural features, bridges and other human features.

Cultural diffusion is the the spread of cultural traits from one culture to another.

2. How does where someone live shape how they live?

The values, beliefs, behaviors, tools and other material objects people use are influenced by their physical environment.

People change when an invention can solve a problem or provide a faster or better way of doing something.

4. What are the four ways that culture is spread?

Culture can spread through factors like migration, trade, conflict and technology.

Cultural traits are spread from one culture to another through movement. This is called cultural diffusion.

Human barriers and physical barriers are the two things that stop cultural diffusion.

Physical barriers can include natural characteristics like mountains, deserts, and bodies of water.

Human or social barriers can include language, religion, and a history of conflict.

5. What happens to a cultural trait when it is diffused into a new culture?

When a cultural trait is diffused into a new culture it is often modified to fit into or resemble the new culture.
