Questions by Seth Kendall with John Kilby; spares by Drake, Mike Bentley, Rob Poirier, Robert Zalimas, & your genial quizmaster

1. It has recently been postulated that one type of this “has no place” in modern usage, and that those who create them “are seriously retarded” and should be penalized $5 for each occurrence. Other variant forms have been phased out in the past, such as those requiring a single response with a single prompt. Another kind with a single response on multiple prompts may also be being phased out, as it has been suggested that a National contest held on the 21st and 22nd of April in College Park did not employ this kind at all, perhaps due to a perceived similarity to the “variable-value” sort which were once the bane of Matt Colvin. For 10 points name these things whose 5-10-15 point and 30-20-10 variety have recently become endangered, which will in theory be the result of the correct answering of this tossup.

Answer: bonus question (accept “bonuses” and with great reluctance “boni”)

2. Scenes ultimately cut from this film included the director’s grandfather as a gunsmith and his father as a musician. A key plot development has a crime boss turn state’s evidence after an unauthorized attempted hit on Frankie Pentangeli, a role that earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Michael V. Gazzo. Another performance prompted real-life mobster Meyer Lansky to congratulate Lee Strasberg, nominated as the Lansky-inspired Hyman Roth. Both Gazzo and Strasberg lost to their castmate Robert De Niro for his portrayal in flashback scenes of the title character. Winning Francis Ford Coppola his only Best Director Oscar, FTP name this 1974 film cross-cutting between a younger Vito Corleone and the continued saga of his son Michael.

Answer: The Godfather (Part) II [do not accept or prompt on The Godfather – not one clue applies!]

3. (JK) As a quarterback, he led Fresno State to a combined 14-21-1 record before becoming an assistant with the team and eventually moving on to coach at Colorado State. He initially coached the tight ends at the school he is most associated with but then turned to wide receivers and helped recruit and coach standouts like Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarrett. After his tenure as offensive coordinator at USC, he took a new job and, as a result, many have questioned his qualifications, especially since his time working in a minor capacity for the Jacksonville Jaguars is his only experience in the NFL. For ten points, name this 31-year-old who recently replaced Art Shell as coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Answer: Lane Kiffin

4. (JK/CS) It was the first game to use the "Cojag," or coin-operated Jaguar, hardware. By attacking the first three humans in this game, the player can become a Kron Hunter. "Get A Life," "X Marks The Spot," "Tank Top," and "Shake Your Buddha" are among the many secret rooms that players of it can seek out. Minutes after first reading this tossup, your genial quizmaster walked past one and found himself reading the credentials of one of the humans on the S.T.A.A.R. team. It would later inspire a sequel subtitled Site 4 as well as a 2005 first-person shooter of the same name featuring HAZMAT employee Ethan Cole, voiced by David Duchovny, as he investigates a viral outbreak at the title location. FTP, name this arcade light gun game where the protagonists fought various baddies, including aliens, in the title place.

Answer: Area 51

5. He claims to have a penchant for dating young, beautiful, unchallenging women, although it is also implied that at some point he has dated Condoleeza Rice, both Martha and Alexis Stewart, and Maureen Dowd. Recently divorced from a beautiful Italian woman from whom he took their joint Arby’s franchise out of sheer spite and subsequently engaged to an auctioneer of surpassing beauty but with bones so brittle that touching hr is difficult, he has problems with both his nagging mother and his father, from whose pronunciation of their common shared Irish surname both his and his brothers differ, yet in spite of this and in spite of the career setback which cost him supervision of the Trivection oven project, we projects calm certainty in his dealings with the head writer and actors of The Girlie Show. For 10 points name this fictional NBC executive played by Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock.

Answer: Jack Donaghy (accept either name)

6. One way of approximating this song’s most signature hooks is using a standard electric bass with ordinary EADG tuning, turning the tone all the way down, and by using a pick fairly close to the ends of the strings play the line E E-G-E-D C-B all on the A string, although the song’s composer used a different method to play the song on the record. The song itself seems to refer to guilt, talking about a message that he can’t forget in spite of the message from his eyes saying leave it alone. The singer finally vows to abandon the drama of the “opera” by going to Wichita and working in straw to sweat and bleed until he can think no more. Taking its name from the composer’s childhood mishearing of the name of a charitable organisation, its hook is played by a six-string guitar through a Digitech whammy pedal due to the insane antipathy of Jack White to the bass. FTP name this song from the album Elephant.

Answer: “Seven Nation Army”

7. (JK) You'll find Al McCoy's Original Taco Salad, the Traverse City Veggie Roll, and 9's All Star Burger on the menu at his namesake sports grill. He spent a season in Cleveland and five in Miami before returning to the team that drafted him for one final season in 2001. In the early 1990's, he set a NBA Finals series record with 17 three-point shots. He made headlines again in April 2007 when, before a first round playoff game, he hit a half-court three-point shot immediately followed by a seated, behind-the-back three-pointer. Also known for his defensive skills, he was, along with Kevin Johnson and Charles Barkley, an essential part of the Phoenix Suns team that lost the 1993 NBA Finals to the Chicago Bulls. For ten points, name this guard whose dunks earned him the nickname "Thunder Dan."

Answer: Dan Majerle

8. It is frequently and unfavorably compared to its sort-of predecessor despite being a different show altogether, focusing less on science fiction and more on horror stories such as H.P. Lovecraft’s “Cool Air” and “Pickman’s Model” and Conrad Aiken’s “Silent Snow, Secret Snow”. For its first two seasons an hour long, several episodes featured Leslie Nielsen and John Astin, but it could on occasion draw names like Joan Crawford, Vincent Price, and Elsa Lancaster. Among its creepier episodes were “A Question of Fear” and “The Caterpillar”. Introduced by artist Tom Wright’s paintings summarizing each piece, FTP name this ‘70’s anthology show hosted by Rod Serling.

Answer: [The] Night Gallery

9. The lyrics not heard in the most famous version of this song, which were included in the version found in Babes in Arms, explains the title figure’s less sophisticated but ultimately more wholesome tastes -- a fondness for prizefights that are not fixed, for baseball even in the bleacher section, and for opera through which she stays awake. As sung by Ella Fitzgerald, the song is in essence that of a good simple woman contrasting her ways against those of the painted elite. The more famous version changes the tone and explanation by adding a disdain for “sharpies and frauds” and “dishing the dirt with all of those broads”. FTP name this song, in which the central character won’t dine at eight, participate in gossip, go to Harlem in furs, or trouble herself with her enemies, most familiar as sung by Frank Sinatra.

Answer: “The Lady is a Tramp”

10. It has recently been suggested that the imputation of fantastic age to this figure was the result of a mistaken reading of “one double aught three” for “one double eight three”, bringing the character’s age closer in line with the script’s reading of 150. That mistake was made in reference to his massacre of a temple of monks due to a nod which was not returned, and he remains ill-tempered with a notable hatred for Caucasians, loathing for Americans, and contempt for women, one of whom eventually kills him with poisoned fish heads in return for plucking out her eye. Yet it is nevertheless his “cruel tutelage” which enables a pupil to escape from the lonely grave of Paula Schultz and, later, to exact revenge by means of the deadliest move in martial arts. FTP name this character played by Gordon Liu, the master of the five-point palm exploding heart technique which he passes on the Beatrix Kiddo, enabling her to Kill Bill.

Answer: Pai Mei

11. Richard Dawson’s tenure on Family Feud and his role in the Running Man show his adeptness at this, and while John Mahoney and Kim Cattrall also excel, their environment may have made it hard to do otherwise. Gone With the Wind shows that Vivien Leigh is superb at it although Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland are not, and both Titanic and The Life of David Gale similarly reveal Kate Winslet’s difficulties with it. While Big Fish shows that Helena Bonham Carter does this very well, performances in The Contender, Hannibal, and Batman Begins suggest that the current best at it might be Gary Oldman. FTP name this ability also manifested in Batman Begins as well as Shaft and American Psycho by Christian Bale, at which English actors disguise their backgrounds by means of a particular vocal talent.

Answer: imitating an American accent (accept equivalent)

*Nota Bene: While Bale was born in Wales and Leigh in India, both spent the majority of their lives in England

12. A scene put back into the DVD release of this film shows how its protagonist meets his eventual secretary, Rachel Ellenstein, whom he rescues from Nazis in Amsterdam in spite of being machine-gunned by an SS officer; he explains his survival to her with the tagline “It’s a kind of magic”. That main character eventually settles down with an antiquarian turned forensic specialist named Brenda Wyatt whom he first attracts by his possession of a weapon so advanced for its age that it would be akin to finding a jet centuries before the Wright brothers flew. But to get it, he had to suffer the death of his mentor and rape of his wife by an enemy who later puts his new girlfriend in jeopardy and whom he must kill to win the Prize, because “There can be only one”. Thus is the Kurgan slain by Connor Macleod in, for 10 points, what film whose title reflects Macleod’s Scottish origins?

Answer: The Highlander

13. They usually appear associated more with Marvel villains than with heroes with a few rare exceptions, like the Vision, Thor, the Scarlet Witch, and Doctor Strange. While largely ornamental on Magneto, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, and Dr. Doom, men like Sidewinder have use for theirs, as does the superhero alter-ego of Tyrone Johnson. In the DC universe they are more commonly associated with the heroes, though that of the Minutemen’s Dollar Bill caused his death in a way that may help explain why Edna Mode refuses to incorporate them in her newer work. Indirectly responsible for the death of ThunderHead, Splashdown, Stratogale, and Syndrome in The Incredibles, for 10 points name this item of apparel at one point synonymous with Superbeings such as Superman.

Answer: capes (accept equivalents)

14. The show’s theme song is performed by Nasty Tales and their Orchestra and is a remake of the William Saroyan-penned Rosemary Clooney hit “Come on-a My House.” Its title figures cheerfully celebrated their second season by unorthodox means, namely a nude pictorial. All three basically look alike, but the youngest – a rap-obsessed daughter of a former Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader – is the sterotypical bleach-blonde moron, the eldest has a master’s degree in communication and is by far the hottest, and it is suspected that the octogenarian lover they share prefers the third. For 10 points name this show chronicling the lives of Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison, and Bridget Maquardt at the Playboy Mansion, whose title comes from the kind of girls Playboy has claimed it really wants as centerfolds.

Answer: Girls Next Door

15. Between the release of their mammoth first and their less successful second album, this group picked up some personnel of whom one prominent member performs on later songs like “Kiss You Back”; in turn that member was given for a 1993 solo project a song originally slated for the whole group, “I Get Around”. It was the brainchild of Greg Jacobs, whose multiple aliases include an Edward G. Robinson-esque “MC Blowfish” on the song “Underwater Rhymes” and an indirect reference as the “Piano Man” in one of their greatest hits, but he is far better known for the identities he establishes for two other vocalists, one named “Shock G” and the other remarkable for his artificial large nose and, eventually, his own dance. Responsible for such songs as “Doowuchyalike” and “Same Song”, for 10 points name this rap group responsible for the persona “Humpty Hump” and his “Humpty Dance”.

Answer: Digital Underground

16. The names of those of them who died and their families are inscribed on Partisan Rock, although one wonders if the name of Daryl, who is shot for swallowing a bug that leads the enemy to them, is on that list. Probably their best fighter is Robert, who becomes a mask-wearing killer on the death of his father and finally dies downing a helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade during the same attack that kills him and Toni, and they are briefly joined by downed fighter pilot Andrew Tanner who leads them on the attack on the Re-Education camp, but in the end all of them die except Erica and Danny who escape while the Eckert brothers provide a diversion. Named for the mascot of the Calumet High School atheletic teams, FTP name this group of resistance fighters "in the early days of World War III", the heroes of Red Dawn.

Answer: Wolverines

17. The Go-Gos are positioned behind a banner bearing the central message of the ad, Dominique Swain writes in on a blackboard, while Kathy Najimy is in one in front of a Christmas tree with Todd Oldham. Variations on the theme were done in two ads by Charlotte Ross holding a bunny, one most unfortunate ad done by David Cross picturing him on a runway, and one done by a reclining Kim Basinger. Perhaps the most iconic image of the campaign is an ad of Christy Turlington, similar to Basinger’s, featuring the model reclining on her stomach without clothing, indicating the preference for a state of undress over the wearing of the offensive apparel. For 10 points name this ad campaign launched by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, in which various celebrities voice their desire to opt for nudity rather than wear the skin of animals.

He has a pleasant demeanor, but essentially has a vendetta against former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, who he once pummeled in effigy. Inducted into the inaugural class of 2005 with the Famous Chicken and the Phoenix Gorilla, for ten points, name this lovable mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Answer: Phillie Phanatic

20. Though it was not separately released, their songs are featured in the 1990 Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, specifically cuts from one of their most famous albums. “Crumbling Land” sounds a lot like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and is similar to some of their music from More, but “Unknown Song” and “Love Scene Version 4” which like “Crumbling Land” all also in Zabriskie Point sound similar to some of the instrumentals on Obscured by Clouds. For 10 points, name the band whose extensive soundtrack work is perhaps better typified by such songs as “Young Lust” and “Run Like Hell” from the similar The Wall.

Answer: soundtracks by Pink Floyd

21. The fact that this alternate personality, for lack of a better term, had not completely emerged after the slaughter of Nute Gunray and his associates may be suggested by the tears of remorse wept for these and other crimes, though soon the apparent disloyalty of his wife and the loss of much of his physical body in Mustafar seemed to guarantee that it would soon become the dominant one. Warning signs should probably have been apparent in the massacre of Tuskens earlier, and when this personality was in charge it was more laconic than its predecessor, backing off protestations double-crossed mining city operator by asking if the latter really thought had been treated unfairly, grimly accepting the apologies of an admiral after strangling him to death, and nearly killing another commander for his disturbing lack of faith, though the death of this personality seems to have been suggested when the subordinate side asked to be unmasked to see his son with his own eyes before perishing. For 10 points name this cloaked, red lightsaber-wielding, masked persona who, from a certain point of view, betrayed and murdered Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars films.

Answer: Darth Vader

22. Like Sherlock Holmes, his residence of sorts is on Baker Street, and amongst the equipment with which he surrounds himself is the Space Hopper, with which he once flew himself out of the universe when he accidentally left the film, and the Mark III, an amphibious flying car. Opposed by a murderous frog, his Italianate crow sidekick, and occasionally by a showbiz-obsessed vampire duck, he is sometimes aided by Agent 57 and by weaponsmith Professor Von Squarkencluck in his missions on which he is dispatched by Colonel K, but although only of marginal help is his sidekick, a cowardly hamster. For 10 points name this character of a British cartoon voiced by David Jason, who is accompanied by Penfold in his opposition to Baron Greenback and who, despite being a rodent, is nevertheless the Greatest Secret Agent in the World.

Answer: Dangermouse

23. (JK) WARNING: YEAR AND SERIES REQUIRED. The eventual winners tied the final game of the series at 4-4 after a three-run inning that saw Tito Landrum and Darrell Porter score. Blowouts by the home team in the series include an 8-2 victory in game two and 12-2 final in game four. In the ninth inning of the sixth and final game, Tom Niedenfuer gave up a three-run and eventually game-winning homer to Jack Clark. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost…. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. This is ‘Sussudio’, a great, great song, a personal favorite.”

Shortly before killing one of the aforementioned prostitutes along with an old acquaintance, Bateman mentions that this artist’s self-title first album “had 4 number one singles on it … It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but ‘The Greatest Love of All’ is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity.
