How Should We Then Live in View of Proverbs 1:7?

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

• You can hear audio message of Proverbs 1:7 at . The sermon is titled, “What does it mean to fear God?” It was given on 3 December 2006.

These are the application points from an exposition I gave on Proverbs 1:7.

1. Consistently lay open your soul to him (e.g., all your sins, temptations, difficulties, sorrows, fears, hopes, desires, and everything, and every circumstance).

2. Be conscious of the conviction of sin, that uneasiness within, and subject yourself to critical spiritual examination and deal with the sinful appetite, unconfessed sin, and unrepentant heart.

3. Allow His goodness, grace, and mercy to be stressed, if not saturated in your daily words and actions.

4. Never give up in your fight with your sinful appetites.

5. Pursue holiness when nobody is looking.

6. Love Him more than you did yesterday.

7. Imitate Him and His humility in your everyday life: Love the unlovely, minister to the needy, and serve the least of these.

8. Trust and confide in Him in your everyday life.

9. Never delight in evil, malice, jealousy, or revenge.

10. Meditate on the Scriptures and be in prayer so steadily, constantly and frequently, as that you may plainly perceive yourself to grow and apply in the knowledge of it.

11. Strive with utmost diligence every week unto Christian maturity than the day

before.

12. Never say anything at all against anybody, but when it is perfectly agreeable to the highest degree of Christian honor, and of love to others, agreeable to the lowest humility, and sense of your own faults and failings, and agreeable to the golden rule (Adapted from Jonathan Edwards, Resolutions).

13. Focus on only on those things that are noble, true, and worthy (Phil. 4:8).

14. Consistently strive to make, maintain and preserve peace and unity with truth and love.

15. Never waist one moment of time; but keep on improving the way you spend your time in the most profitable way you can unto the glory of God.

16. Determine with all your might to live life with a passion for excellence.

17. Honestly forgive those who have hurt you.

18. Always seek to trace your habitual sin to its original cause.

19. Understand and live out God’s plan for your life: Glorify Him by imitating the Lord Jesus Christ in heart, mind, and action.

20. Pray to be grieved about those who don’t know Jesus Christ; be pro-active in fulfilling the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ.
