A LETTER FROM AN EXCHANGE STUDENT

A. Read the following text and answer the questions:

Dear Eda,

I’m sorry I haven’t written to you since I left home six months ago, but it has been a busy semester for me. In spite of my heavy work schedule, I have managed to have some fun.

Since my arrival in Washington, I have gone on a tour of the city and visited some famous landmarks and tourist spots. I have taken some pictures to prove it, too. I have already visited the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. I have gone on a tour of the White House and seen where the President lives. I have been to the top of the Washington Monument and have visited the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. My roommate and I have seen a couple of plays and films at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I have already eaten in a Vietnamese, a Brazilian, and a Mexican restaurant and have tried different national dishes. I have also spent a lot of money on magazines and books.

I still haven’t done everything I would like to do before I leave this city. I haven’t gone to a symphony concert or to a ballet performance yet. So far, I haven’t taken a boat trip on the Potomac River. However, I intend to do all these things in the near future. I haven’t made any new friends up to now, but I hope to meet some soon.

Last weekend, I went to one of the famous universities in the city. It was very interesting. Next weekend, some of the other foreign students and I are going to speak about our culture in one of the suburbs. Then we are going to have dinner with some American families. I will tell you all about it in my next letter. Please write soon and tell me what you have done since I left you.

Your friend,

Berk

1- Why hasn’t Berk written to Eda for a long time?

2- What has Berk visited?

3- What has he eaten?

4- What has he spent a lot of money on?

5- What does he intend to do in the near future?

6- What did he do last weekend?

7- What is he going to do next weekend?

B. Discuss these questions in class:

Have you ever been to the U.S.A.? If yes, when did you go there? What did you see?

Have you ever been abroad ?

Have you ever taken a boat trip on a river ?

Have you ever eaten Vietnamese, Brazilian or Mexican food ?

C. Group work:

1- Form groups of four and make a list of places to visit and things to see in Istanbul that you think can be interesting for an exchange student from the U.S.A.

2- Compare your lists. Tell each other about the places you have already seen on the list, and ask about the places you haven’t seen yet.

3- Imagine you are a foreign exchange student in Istanbul. Use your notes from Group work 1 and write a letter about the things you have done in Istanbul.

LOCAL GIRL MARRIES POP STAR

Thousands of young people came to Hastings last weekend to see the wedding between eighteen-year-old Joanna Cooper and Britain’s latest pop idol, John Paul. A week before the wedding, a reporter from a pop magazine interviewed Joanna. Here is part of that interview.

REPORTER: Well, Joanna, how long have you actually known John Paul?

JOANNA: Not very long, really. We met about six months ago.

R: Where? In London or…

J: No, it was here in Hastings, actually…in June… when John Paul came here to do a concert.

R: But how did you meet him? Did you go backstage after the concert or what?

J:Oh, no! Nothing like that! It was much simpler really. My father arranged the concerted. So there was a party after the concerts and they invited me, too.

R: And that was when you first met John Paul?

J: Yes, it was. But I was so nervous! Well, I’ve always been a John Paul fan, but I never thought I could ever meet him… not face to face.

R: Did you talk to him?

J: Well, I think I said I enjoyed the concert and that sort of thing, but not much else, really.

R: So when did the big romance start, then?

J: Er… about a week after that, I think. Yes, it was! John Paul phoned me up one night and invited me to a party in London.

R: Did you go?

J: What do you think? Of course I went! I don’t think I have ever been so excited in my whole life before. Well, it was like a dream. John Paul inviting me to a party. Me! I just couldn’t believe it.

R: And that was the start of everything?

J: Yes, it was. For the next few weeks we saw each other three or four times a week. Then, one night - it was about eleven thirty, I think - he phoned me up and asked me to marry him.

R: Really? Wasn’t that a bit sudden?

J: Yes, I suppose it was. But I didn’t think so at the time. I knew I loved him and he said he loved me, so I said yes immediately. It was the quickest decision I’ve ever made in my life.

R: So you think you’re going to be happy together?

J: Oh, I know it!

R: Have you decided where you’re going to live yet?

J: No, we haven’t really. We’ve talked about it quite a lot, but we haven’t made up our minds yet. Maybe London… maybe New York. Who knows?

R: But not Hastings?

J: No, definitely not Hastings! Well, I’ve lived here all my life so I think it’s time for a change.

R: But you’ve decided to get married in Hastings?

J: Yes, we have. We did it for my parents, really. All our relatives live around here, so…

1- When did Joanna and John meet?

2- Where and how did they meet?

3- Why did Joanna go to a part in London?

4- Did Joanna like the party? Why or why not?

5- What was the quickest decision Joanna has ever made in her life?

6- Where is their wedding? Why?

7- Have they decided where they’re going to live yet?

B. Discuss these questions in class:

Have you ever met a famous person? If yes, where and how did it happen?

Have you ever thought of marrying a very famous person?

What are the difficulties of being the husband or wife of a famous person?

Can you think of any advantages of being the husband or wife of a famous person?

What kind of a husband/wife would you like to have?
