Percentage of Water In Popcorn Lab

Percentage of Water In Popcorn Lab

Purpose: To determine the percentage of water in popcorn by mass

Procedure:

1. Mass a dirty Erlenmeyer flask. Mass about 20 kernels of popcorn in a dirty Erlenmeyer flask.

2. Put some aluminum foil over the flask and poke a couple small holes in it.

3. Heat the flask over the Bunsen Burner until all the kernels pop. Note…if it starts to burn before they all pop…stop anyway. Remove unpopped kernels before remassing.

WHILE HEATING…CONSTANTLY MOVE THE FLASK AROUND ON THE WIRE GAUZE. USE CRUCIBLE TONGS TO HOLD THE FLASK…DO NOT LEAVE IT SITTING ON THE WIRE GAUZE AT ANY TIME.

4. When the flask is cooled…re mass.

5. Find the mass of water in the kernels by subtraction.

6. Find the mass of the unpopped kernels by subtraction.

7. Determine the percentage composition of water in the kernels.

8. Repeat the entire procedure, average your data.
