How to open a bank account

So you need a bank account. Perhaps this is your first account, or maybe you’ve got one already but need a new one.

If you haven't selected a bank account yet, a good place to start is with our video: ‘How to choose a bank account’. Once you’ve done that, opening an account is usually quite straight forward.

All banks will ask for proof of who you are – such as a passport or a driving licence, and proof of your address – like a rent book or Council Tax bill.

You can speed things up by finding out what documents the bank needs and having them to hand when you apply for your account.

If you don't have the right documents, ask what they will accept instead. Some banks will take a letter from a responsible person, like a teacher or a social worker, or a benefits notification letter.

Then it’s time to fill in the application form. Depending on the bank you’ve chosen, you can do this in a branch, on the internet, over the phone, or sometimes by post.

The form will include things like your name, address, details of your employer if you have one, and how much you'll pay into the account each month.

If you’re opening a joint account, then you’ll both need to fill in the application form and show two sets of documents.

Before signing up for an account, make sure you understand everything about it, including any fees and charges. These vary from one account to another.

Unfortunately, not all applications are accepted. This can be for a variety of reasons, depending on the account.

If you’re having problems getting accepted by a bank or a building society, it’s worth seeing if you can apply to a credit union instead.
