The Power Trap

Everyone at some point finds him or herself persuaded by a sudden desire for power. It may be a simple, irrational desire or it can be a strong, serious one. In the world of fiction, Pepe Garcia displays a serious hunger for power throughout the short story, “The Tiger’s Heart.” In Pepe’s village, he initially has the power because he exists as the only villager who owns a rifle. Even though he is able to later kill a tiger with only his machete, he lies and claims he kills the animal with his rifle in order to maintain his power. Ultimately, in James Kjelgaard’s work, “The Tiger’s Heart,” Pepe Garcia’s desire for power exists as both a character strength and weakness due to the traits this desire causes him to display.
