LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER RECERTIFICATION
Specification S-30
The following requirements are specified for the recertification of law enforcement officers who have not been employed in the State of Maine as a law enforcement officer for a period of more than two years and who has been previously certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as a law enforcement officer or have successfully completed the Law Enforcement Preservice Course (LEPS) and never certified in Maine as a law enforcement officer.
Requirements:
A. Has been employed as a law enforcement officer.
B. Has completed the prior 2 years of MCJA mandatory in-service law enforcement training.
C. Has had a background check with no disqualifying conduct or convictions.
D. Has successfully passed the MCJA Law Enforcement Recertification Course, as approved by the Board of Trustees, prior to being sworn in.
E. Has successfully passed the Law Enforcement Recertification Exam, with a minimum score of 75%, prior to being sworn in.
F. In the case of an individual seeking recertification as a full-time law enforcement officer, must successfully pass the full-time officers Law Enforcement Officer’s Certification Exam, within 6 months of being sworn in. If the exam is failed 3 times, then the Law Enforcement Recertification Course will have to be repeated.
Procedures:
A. For Recertification as a full-time law enforcement officer with 2 or more years of inactivity:
1. The following documentation must be submitted:
a. MCJA Notice of Employment.
b. MCJA background form.
c. Proof of completion of the 2 years of prior mandatory in-service law enforcement training.
d. Proof of completion of the Law Enforcement Recertification Course.
e. Proof of successful completion of the Law Enforcement Recertification Exam.
2. After the documentation is submitted to the MCJA, a Provisional Certificate of Eligibility will be issued for a full-time law enforcement officer. The Provisional Certificate is valid for up to 6 months to successfully complete the full-time Law Enforcement Office’s Certification Exam.
3. If the full-time officer with the Provisional Certificate of Eligibility passes the full-time officers Law Enforcement Officer’s Certification Exam, with a minimum score of 75%, the Director will issue a Certificate of Eligibility for a full-time law enforcement officer.
C. For Recertification as a part-time law enforcement officer between 2-10 years of inactivity:
1. The following documentation must be submitted:
a. MCJA Notice of Employment.
b. MCJA background form.
c. Proof of completion of the 2 years of prior mandatory in-service law enforcement training.
d. Proof of completion of the Law Enforcement Recertification Course.
e. Proof of successful completion of the Law Enforcement Recertification Exam.
2. After the documentation is submitted to the MCJA, a Provisional Certificate of Eligibility will be issued for a part-time law enforcement officer. The Provisional Certificate is valid for up to 12 months to complete Phase III (80-hour FTO Program).
3. After the documentation for Phase III is submitted to the MCJA, a Certificate of Eligibility will be issued for a part-time law enforcement officer.
D. For Initial Certification eligibility as a part-time law enforcement officer that has successfully completed the LEPS course or a part-time law enforcement officer with more than 10 years of inactivity:
1. Must complete the LEPS course again, as approved by the Board of Trustees, prior to being sworn in.
2. Has successfully passed the Law Enforcement Pre-Service Exam, with a minimum score of 75%, prior to being sworn in.
3. After the documentation is submitted to the MCJA, a Provisional Certificate of Eligibility will be issued for a part-time law enforcement officer. The Provisional Certificate is valid for up to 12 months to complete Phase III (80-hour FTO Program).
4. After the documentation for Phase III is submitted to the MCJA, a Certificate of Eligibility will be issued for a part-time law enforcement officer.
