Vocabulary PowerPoint Directions
1. Open PowerPoint
MAC: Launcher/PowerPoint
PC: Start/Programs/Microsoft PowerPoint
Slide 1:
2. Select a slide with a “title box” only
*Go to View/Toolbars and make sure “Drawing” is checked
3. Type your first vocabulary word’s sentence in the title box, adjusting the size of the box accordingly by placing the cursor at the corners of the box and dragging. Remember font size must be at least 36 and font must be easy to read.
4. Go to “Insert,” “text box” and then draw a textbox in one corner. In the box, type the part of speech of the word. Font at least 36 size!
5. Insert another text box for your word’s definition.
6. Go to “Insert,” “Picture,” “Clip art,” to find clip art relevant to your vocabulary sentence.
▪ Click on the Clips Online button to search Microsoft’s Internet site for more clipart. If Clips Online doesn’t work, get on the internet and type in:
7. Add Background
▪ On the menu bar at the top of the window click Format/Background
▪ Click on the down arrow and More Colors or Fill Effects to view background options. Browse through the different tabs. Make sure we can read the sentence!
▪ Click Apply All once you have made your choice.
Highlighted=selected.
❑ Words/phrases are highlighted when the cursor is pulled across them so they seem to have a black part around them (as shown).
❑ A piece of clip art or shape/symbol is highlighted when white boxes appear at the corners of the object (as shown around the box here)
❑ A text box is highlighted when the lines around it are dotted not slashed-click on the box twice to “highlight.”
8. Draw a square around the vocabulary word by click on the square icon at the side for a MAC or at the bottom for a PC of the window.
▪ To make the fill of the square transparent, make sure the square is highlighted and
▪ click on the down arrow next to the paint bucket
at the bottom of the window.
▪ Click on No Fill
▪ To change the width and color of the square
outline, click on the appropriate icons.
IMPORTANT!
9. Underline the context clues by clicking on the line icon.
▪ If you use more than one line, you must GROUP them so that they will animate at the same time. Follow the steps given under number ten to group the lines.
10. Draw arrows from word to the part of speech and from the word to the
definition using the arrow tool
TO GROUP OBJECTS:
a. Click once the first line used to underline a context clue.
b. Hold the Shift key down while clicking on the next line. Both lines should now be highlighted. Continue clicking until all the lines are highlighted.
c. Mac: Click on the button at the top left corner of the window.
PC: Click on the DRAW button at the lower left corner of the window.
d. Click the word Group. Your items will now move as one! (To ungroup, click again on the group, go back to the “Group button” and click “ungroup”
Your slide show needs to be animated so that
1. On the first mouse click, the context clues fly in
2. On the second mouse click, the part of speech flies in
3. On the third mouse click, the definition flies in
How to Add Animation
a. Click on the object you wish to animate (please click on these objects in the above order).
b. MAC: From the menu at the top of the window, select Slide Show/ Animation/ Fly In.
PC: From the menu at the top of the window, select Slide Show/Pre-set Animation /Fly in).
c. To confirm that the objects are animated in the correct order, select Slide Show/View Show.
Slide 2:
1.Go to the Menu bar at the top and click Insert/New Slide.
2. Click on the Title part of the slide and type your sentence/memory device in at least 36 size font.
3. Make sure to include your mnemonic device
4. Insert clip art that make sense with your sentence. Repeat the steps for your second vocabulary word slides. Make sure all four slides are on the same Powerpoint show!!!

To Change Font Size
Highlight the text you wish to alter.
On the menu bar at the top, select Format/Font.
Make sure the font size is at least 36 for all text on every slide!
