Trustee Duties & Responsibilities

The six principle duties of PSU Trustees are:

1. To ensure that the PSU complies with its governing document and the law.

2. To ensure that the PSU carries out its purposes for the public benefit.

3. To ensure that the PSU is accountable.

4. To act in the Charity’s best interests.

5. To manage the Charity’s resources responsibly

6. To act with reasonable care and skill.

In particular PSU Trustees:

1. Contribute actively to the Board’s role in providing firm strategic direction to the Charity, setting overall policy, and agreeing goals & organisational targets.

2. Attend Board Meetings (5 to 6 per year).

3. Contribute as a member of one or more Board committees (currently: Audit, Finance & Resources, Fundraising, and Pay & Remuneration).

4. Use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have both to help the Board reach sound decisions and to provide support and guidance to the CEO and the Charity’s staff, where required.

5. Lend support to a number of Units around the country (currently two per trustee) and visit each at least once a year.

6. Attend PSU events and support other fundraising initiatives whenever possible

7. Safeguard the PSU’s reputation.

The PSU expects Trustees to observe Nolan’s Seven Principles of Conduct of Public Life:

• Leadership

PSU Trustees are the Directors of Court Based Personal Support, a charitable company limited by guarantee.

Person Specification:

• Commitment to the PSU

• Willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort

• Strategic vision

• Good, independent judgement

• Ability to think creatively

• Willingness to speak their mind

• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship

• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

• Understanding and commitment to Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

• Understanding of charity finance and fundraising

• The skills to analyze proposals and examine their financial consequences

• Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the Board

• Willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis.

• Willingness to travel to PSU units around the country on occasion.
