Vascular Plant Parts

/ What You'll Need:

? Small plant (This can be bought or harvested from your yard. Dandelions and tulips work well.) ? Small shovel (This is to be used if you harvest a plant from your yard.) ? Scissors ? Tape or glue ? Pen or pencil

0 What You'll Do:

1. If you're harvesting a plant from your yard, use the small shovel to dig up the plant by the roots. Note:

Be sure to ask your parent's permission before harvesting a plant from your yard. If you bought a plant from the store, carefully remove it from any container it may have come in.

2. With the supervision of an adult, use the scissors to cut the plant into its various parts (roots, stem,

leaves, and flowers). If you're not sure what different parts there are, refer back to the Vascular Plant Parts module on the Science for Kids section of the dTERRA? Science Blog.

3. Using tape or glue, attach the plant parts to their designated spot on the worksheet.

4. Using a pen or pencil, write the function next to each plant part in the space provided.

, What Does It Mean?

There are thousands of different vascular plants on Earth, but most of them have the same parts. Each plant part helps the plant survive by allowing it to stay grounded during storms and absorb water and nutrients (roots), store nutrients and reach for sunlight (stem), create plant food through photosynthesis (leaves), and produce seeds (flowers). Now that you understand the different vascular plant parts, you can better appreciate the amazing world you live in!

3 What to Do Next:

? Perform this activity on another plant and record the differences of the various parts. ? With a parent's permission, post a picture of your activity on social media for others to see.
