AN EDUCATED PERSON IS ONE WHO HAS LEARNED HOW TO LEARN...HOW TO ADAPT AND

CHANGE

"An educated person is one who has learned how to learn...how to adapt and change."1

Objective

"The only man who is educated is the man who has learned how to adapt and change;

Changingness, reliance on process rather than upon static knowledge, is the only thing that makes any

sense as a goal for education in the modern world."2 There are two intertwined objectives regarding this

quote; how the elaborated concept affects educators and how it affects learners. Regarding the quote,

what draws my attention is the flexibility of acquiring knowledge and how it can be coped with through

variable ways of learning. I personally believe in this quote as my personal experiences accord it. One

of the subjects I am teaching right now is not the major I studied in university; but my enthusiasm has

pushed me to teach it. I started to teach the subject and through the course of undertaking complementary

relevant readings, I found a great amount of details I would not have been able to learn if I had not

undergone teaching the subject. In other words, my teaching has become a means of my learning.

Furthermore, considering the quoted sentences as well as my personal experiences and regarding

the changing nature of knowledge, I have come to the idea that a wise learner is the one who never puts

an end for learning process which requires adaption and change. Also, in regard with the high pace of

the contemporary progression in different fields, I believe reminding yourself: "I do not know

thoroughly" is more productive than "I know," since the first one is less rigid and absolute which accords

the transitory nature of learning and knowledge. There is a narrative from Islamic Prophet

Mohammad(pbuh)3 that says "Look for knowledge, from cradle to grave"4.

Reflective

By contemplating the quoted lines, it can be concluded that teaching the body of knowledge is

not supposed to be the main concern of an instructor, but the process through which the concept is taught

and how the concept is presented are more significant. Moreover, as the process of teaching and learning

is ongoing and vital, it requires frequent update. Consequently, educating learners by involving them in

the process of teaching and supervising their development as well as engaging them as thinker learners

are highly favored.

Interpretive

One of the most eye-catching points of the quote is the transitory feature of knowledge which

makes it changeable and even potential to be fallible. Considering the fast growth of scientific fields and

new discoveries which sometimes open new and even opposite ideas, the absoluteness of knowledge is

questioned. Therefore, the emphasis is on the correlative teaching methods as the nature of teaching and

its process are more prior than the body of knowledge. As a result, to have a more lively and practical

method of instruction, an adult instructor can take advantage of his/ her pupil age to involve them in the

teaching process as well as improving the critical feature of their minds.

Decisional

Regarding the discussed issue, instructors have to shift their priority to effective teaching

methods by engaging adult pupil and make them active elements in teaching. Thus, personally, I have

come to the idea that a proper teacher is not supposed to be too rigid about what he/ she assumes the

authentic knowledge as the pupil`s idea he/ she might reject once, might be the one which might

revolutionize the body of knowledge the instructors attempts to thrust in his/her pupil`s innovative mind.
