LOS PRONOMBRES DE COMPLEMENTO INDIRECTO

A. An indirect object of a sentence is the noun TO whom or FOR whom the

action of the verb takes place. It tells us where the direct object is

going. An indirect object answers the question:

To whom/For whom is (direct object) being ____________?

(verb from sentence)

Take a look at these examples:

• Mary reads the book to me.

(indirect object)

María lee el libro a mí.

(indirect object)

• I buy the flowers for Ana.

(indirect object)

Yo compro las flores para Ana.

(indirect object)

B. We can replace the indirect objects in a sentence with pronouns just as

we were able to replace the direct objects.

Did Mary read the book to the girls? Yes, she read the book to them.

¿Leyó María el libro a las chicas? Sí, les leyó el libro.

Did you buy the flowers for Ana? Yes, I bought the flowers for her.

¿Compraste las flores para Ana? Sí, le compré las flores.

Notice that the indirect object pronoun goes in front of the verb in Spanish!

The prepositions A and PARA were dropped in the new sentence in Spanish.

Some sentences have a direct object but, do not have an indirect object.

However, ALL sentences that have an indirect object will have a direct

object also... even if the direct object is only IMPLIED. For example:

Marta escribe a Ana. What is being written?

It is IMPLIED that a letter or note (the direct object) is being written.

C. In Spanish, an indirect object can only be replaced with an indirect

object pronoun. Take a look at the indirect object pronouns below:
