Learning Objectives

1. Define the Internet and the World Wide Web.

2. State the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web

3. Use simple Boolean operators to do internet research on a given topic

4. Work with a team to research and summarize the answers to a set of research questions for a topic

Your Preparation

▪ Read the lecture notes and PowerPoint notes files to identify the content being presented.

▪ Read and understand the Scavenger Hunt assignment

▪ Upload the external links listed below to your course Blackboard site for students to explore.

▪ Be prepared to assist students to upload files to their AFS space.

▪ Load files into BlackBoard as appropriate. You can give students access to the PowerPoint files with notes or to the Slides and Notes documents. You may want to check the contents of the notes and add or delete as necessary for your class. The Slide Notes files are in both Word format.

▪ Students will connect to a web site Yuyan built about the Internet and World Wide Web.



▪ There is a note-taking handout available for note-taking if students want to use it. All information on this site and in the search and evaluation presentation will be on the quiz during Week 5.

▪ If there is extra time available, have students work on their research forums.

• Remind students the Word Project is due on week 5

Suggested Lesson Plan

1. Take roll, give any announcements, get computers started, etc. (5 minutes)

2. Administer quiz 2 for your classes, be sure to create a password and set a time limit-20 minutes should be sufficient

3. Present a summary of the topics that will be covered today (5 minutes):

a. Web searching and evaluation skills – a short presentation with examples for good searching and an in-class Scavenger project which will be uploaded to AFS space or sent through the Digital Drop Box.

b. Internet and WWW – a self study online assignment that can be started in class and completed outside of class. This content will be included in Quiz 3 next week.

c. Work on Research Group project that was assigned last week.

4. Present the PowerPoint file titled Search and Evaluate.ppt and assign the Scavenger hunt for in-class work. (20 minutes) This activity file will be uploaded to their AFS space when completed. You can allow 30 minutes for this activity.

5. Direct students to the Internet and WWW web site for self-study. Point out where the note-taking handout is stored in BlackBoard. They can download this file and take notes electronically as they go through the presentation. There is no assignment to be turned in for this task. (40 minutes) If students are not finished at the end of the time you have allotted for this work ask them to complete it outside of class.

6. If there is time, you can ask them to spend time on their word project or on their research projects.
