COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS
SUB COMMISSION ON THE PROMOTION
AND PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
FIFTY SEVENTH SESSION
WORKING GROUP ON MINORITIES(WGM)
ELEVENTH SESSION
30TH MAY- 3RD JUNE
INTERVENTION UNDER ITEM 3(b) OF THE PROVISIONAL AGENDA: RECOMMENDATIONS
Thank you Mr Chairman for giving me this opportunity to speak
I am Innocent Akpotedja Adjenughure, the Executive Director of Institute for Dispute Resolution(IDR), Ekpan, near Warri, Delta State of Nigeria. IDR is an NGO advocating peace resolution of conflicts, reconciliation, disarmament and the eradication of small arms and light weapons(SALW).
The following are my recommendations to the UN Working Group on Minorities
1) That it should liaise and network adequately with international organisations involved in the field of minority rights such as Minority Rights Group International so as to be able to fulfill its mandate
2) That the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights(OHCHR) should give adequate attention to matters relating to minority rights in the same way it does the Indigenous Peoples Rights
3) That a practical skills training on conflict Prevention, Resolution, Reconciliation and Peacebuilding be organised for the minorities as it was done for the indigenous people. OHCHR should approach UNITAR to replicate the training on Conflict Prevention it organised for the indigenous people with minorities
4) That in order for the UN to realise its Millennium Development Goals MDGs and halve the rate of poverty worldwide and particularly in Africa it should encourage debt cancellation and forgiveness for poverty ridden African nations to give them fresh start to achieve the MDGs.
5) That Regional Workshops should be organised in various regions of the world to bring awareness of UN Declarations on Minorities to regional governments, NGOs and donor agencies in various regions.
6) That various agencies of the United Nations such as the UNDP, UNEP, UNICEF etc at Country Level should support the efforts of minority rights NGOs in their various countries.
7)
