SOL 5.5 Study Guide

*Scientists classify organisms according to their shapes, sizes, and DNA. Classification allows scientists to identify important characteristics about organisms and determine how the organisms are related.

or nonvascular (ex. horsetails, conifers, ferns)

Animal - a member of a kingdom that contains groups that are either

vertebrates or invertebrates (ex. worms, birds, amphibians, insects, frogs,

butterfly, sponges)

Fungi - a member of a kingdom that contains some one-celled living things

but mostly many-celled living things that absorb food from their

environment; likes it damp and dark (ex. lichens, molds, mushrooms)

Protist - a member of a kingdom that contains mostly one-celled living

things, some that make food and some that hunt for food (ex. green

algae, amoeba, euglenas, paramecium)

Bacteria- a member of a kingdom that contains one-celled living things that have no nucleus, or center, in their cell body (ex. streptococci, salmonella, bacillis) * They usually cluster or link together.
