Living on the farm by Ashley Pearson

Every day I get up at 5 am in the morning. I start the day by letting the chickens into the chicken coop, and then I get the cows out of the barn and take them to the milk shed to be milked. There are about 183 cows to do before 6:30 a.m. After that, I let the horses out into the paddock and then feed them. After that has been done, my mum and sister get the ducks and geese and let them into the pond. This will take until seven o'clock in the morning. Then I let the sheep into the field with help from the sheepdog. The dogs have to be watched because they could bite the sheep, so we use a special whistle called a thimble. This will call the dog away from the sheep. We feed the sheep a special mix. When that is done, we take the quad into the field to collect the eggs from the hens and to put them into the incubator for two weeks. This will take until 8 o'clock. This is the time when I go to Bennington for the day, where I study. I walk to the station and wait for the train to Basingstoke. When I get to Basingstoke, I walk from the station down the hill across the road and into Bennington. After I finish at Bennington, I go back to Farnborough station. Then I have to walk back to the farm.

Level B Read the text below `Come with me to exotic Jamaica' by Rose Campbell. Then have a go at answering the following questions.

Come with me to exotic Jamaica by Rose Campbell

Come with me to Ocho Rios in Jamaica which is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. My house is on the top of the hill and I am swaying in a hammock on my veranda. I can see the ocean surrounding me and the blue waves flapping together. I can see the various size of palm trees in the distance with thick green leaves swaying from side to side. Below the veranda I can hear the sound of people chatting and laughing and crying children. I can hear the crunching of footsteps on the ground as they are rushing around. I can hear the noise of cocks crowing and the sweet noise of the humming bird as he hums. There is music from all sides of the island and church and reggae compete together. I can smell sweet corn being roasted on a spit and the smell of popcorn, plantain and chicken being barbecued. The smell of the smoke from the barbecue is thick and it tries to cover the smells from the fresh washing on the line. I can feel the intense heat rising up from the ground. When I am there, I have a feeling of warmth because I am united with all my relatives. Ocho Rios is special to me because it was where I was born and brought up and I can reflect on good memories and sad times, but time has moved on and things are not the same anymore.
