SOCIAL 30: IDEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES

[pic]

Course Description: The principles of liberalism have played a significant role in the development of modem democratic societies. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of modem liberal thought and the tenets of competing ideologies is important in the development of active, informed and responsible citizens. This understanding will enable students to effectively investigate, analyze and evaluate government policies and actions and develop individual and collective responses to contemporary local, national and global issues. As such, students will explore the origins and complexities of ideologies and examine multiple perspectives regarding the principles of classical and modem liberalism. An analysis of various political and economic systems will allow students to assess the viability of the principles of liberalism. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues.

Classroom Expectations:

As a grade 12 student, you will be expected to arrive to class on time, with all necessary materials, in preparation for the day’s lesson. Homework and assignments will have due-dates that you are expected to meet unless a circumstance does not allow for this to happen. If this is the case, communication is key. If you are unable to complete the assigned work for social class, it is necessary that you discuss the details with me either in person or through email. When the circumstances allow, an extension of the due date will be allowed. If extension requests become frequent, a discussion will be had with both Mr. Main and your parental contact. The Alberta School of Ballet is a safe learning environment for all. I have a zero tolerance policy for bullying in my classroom. If you or a peer are having conflict with another student, please know that my door is always open for a discussion in order to resolve issues that arise. In order to be successful in my class, it is important that you are consistently being nice, working hard, and having fun!
