Homework 2 - About My Street and Neighborhood

Graded Composition 3 – Describing a Room

Write a paragraph about a room you have spent a lot of time in or a room that you like. Use many adjectives to make your description interesting and specific! When you write your paragraph, be sure to:

1. Write on a 8 1/2 by 11 inch piece of paper. Use dark pencil or a black pen.

(or you may use a computer if you prefer, but a handwritten assignment is fine).

2. Write your name, date, class (ESL022), and assignment number (Comp 3 Draft 1) in the upper right corner of the paper.

3. Write a title for the paragraph on the top line of the paper. Follow the rules for good titles listed on pages 25-26.

4. DOUBLE-SPACE!

5. Be sure to indent the first sentence of the paragraph.

6. Include a topic sentence that states the main idea. Make sure that the sentence is not too narrow or specific, but that it states the general idea of the whole paragraph.

7. Use a capital letter to begin each sentence and for all proper nouns (names of people, places, things).

8. Use a period to end each sentence.

9. Be careful with subject-verb agreement!

10. Write between 9 and 12 sentences.

11. Include a minimum of 10 adjectives. Try to use a few paired adjectives (2 adjectives used together to modify the same noun). Underline the adjectives.

12. Give the paper to the instructor on Monday, March 2. The assignment is worth 30 points.

Example:

Reminder of Childhood

I like to look at the small spare bedroom in my house because it reminds me of the happy, carefree days of my youth. My parents originally bought the set of furniture that is now in that bedroom when I was ten years old. All of the furniture has beautiful, intricate carvings of flowers. The wood is painted antique white with green trim. When you enter the room, the foot of a twin bed with a gorgeous headboard is on your right. There is a short nightstand to the left of the bed. There is a low, wide dresser with a tall mirror next to the nightstand. There is a small desk with a comfortable, matching chair across from the door and below a window. There is a tall bookcase next to the desk. My parents didn’t buy the bookcase. It was handmade by my talented, loving father to match the other store-bought furniture. Whenever I walk into this room, I remember the many years I spent as a girl relaxing on this fabulous furniture, laughing with my friends, and dreaming of the future.
