Vocabulary in Language Teaching

Second Edition

Internationally recognized as one of the leading texts in its field, this volume offers a comprehensive introduction to vocabulary for language teachers who would like to know more about the way vocabulary works. Two leading specialists make research and theory accessible, providing the background knowledge necessary for practitioners to make informed choices about vocabulary teaching and testing. This second edition retains the popular format of the first edition, and has been rewritten to take account of the many developments in the past twenty years. There is a greater focus on the vocabulary learning process, with new chapters on incidental learning and intentional learning, and a new wide-ranging discussion of formulaic language. The book now also includes extensive treatment of word lists and vocabulary tests, with explanations of their various strengths and limitations. Updated further reading sections, and new Exercises for Expansion, make this volume more invaluable than ever. Norbert Schmitt is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham. He is interested in all aspects of second language vocabulary, and has published 8 books and over 100 journal articles and book chapters on vocabulary and applied linguistics topics. Diane Schmitt works in the areas of syllabus design, materials development, and test development with emphases on vocabulary acquisition, all aspects of English for Academic Purposes, plagiarism, and English Medium Instruction. She has published articles, book chapters, and textbooks on these topics. She was a Senior Lecturer in EFL/TESOL for twenty-five years at Nottingham Trent University.

Norbert:

In the first edition (which I wrote just after completing my Ph.D.), I dedicated the book to my mentors. Looking back, I would like to continue that, because without them, my career would have been much less successful:

To Ron Carter, Mike McCarthy, Paul Meara, and Paul Nation for taking me under their wings when I was just starting out.

This second edition was written toward the end of my career, and I would like to dedicate it looking forward:

To my former Ph.D. apprentices who are now publishing exciting research of their own (in chronological order): Tomoko Ishii, Wen-ta (Thomas) Tseng, Faisal Alhomoud, Phil Durrant, Anna Siyanova-Chanturia, Ron Martinez, Ana Pellicer-S?nchez, Suhad Sonbul, Hilde van Zeeland, Kholood Saigh, Marijana Macis, M?lodie Garnier, Laura Vilkait-Lozdien, Benjamin Kremmel, and Beatriz Gonz?lez-Fern?ndez. Also to other former members of my Vocabulary Research Group: Sam Barclay and Pawel Szudarski. I look forward to seeing how you move the field far beyond what I could ever have imagined, and how your students (my academic grandchildren) develop the next generation of ideas.

Diane:

For my parents, Norman and Donna, who supported me in going to Japan so many years ago, where I unexpectedly found my applied linguistics career.
