1. Closed Syllable

➢ Ends with a consonant

➢ Vowel before the the final consonant usually has a short sound

i. Ex: that

2. VCE-Vowel consonant e syllable

• final e is silent

• the final e at the end makes the vowel have a long sound (mule) mark it w/a macron

3. CV-Open Syllable

• ends with a vowel

• has a long sound (says its name)

• an open syllable can be just one letter IF that letter is a vowel

• a e I o u o / pen

4. VV-Dipthong Syllable

• Two (2) adjacent vowels pronounced together

• Dipthong( dif thong)syllable has a special sound:

o Sail

o Snow

o light

5. R-combination syllable VR

• always has one (1) vowel followed by an R: er, ir, or, ur, ar, ear

• sounds: bird; start; burn; learn.

6. C-Le- Consonant Le Syllable

• comes at the end of a word

• consonant Le syllable has NO vowel sound

• the e at the end is silent

• cable

• stable

• cradle

• bible

• little

Syllable Division

1. one syllable words are never divided.

2. a compound word is divided between the words that make it a compound word:

a. rain/coat

b. base/ball

3. When two (2) or more consonants come between 2 vowels in a word, the word is usually divided between the first 2 consonants:

a. Trum/pet

b. Hun/gry

4. When a word has a suffix, divide between the root word and the suffix:

a. Melt/ed

b. Soft/ness

c. Sew/ing

5. When a word has a prefix, divide the word between the root word and the prefix:

a. Mis/lead

b. Pro/create

6. When a single consonant comes between two (2) vowels in a word, the word is usually divided before the consonant if the vowel is long:

a. Mu/sic

b. Pa/per

c. Po/lite

7. When a single consonant comes between 2 vowels in a word, the word is divided after the consonant, IF the vowel is SHORT:

a. Clev/er

b. Lem/on

c. Rob/in

d. Trav/el

8. When a vowel is sounded ALONE in a word, it forms a syllable by itself:

a. Dis/o/bey

b. a/live

c. mon/u/ment

9. When two (2) vowels come together in a word and are sounded separate, divide the word between the two (2) vowels:

a. Rad/i/o

b. Di/et

c. Cru/el

10. When a word ends in le, preceded by a consonant, the word is divided before the consonant:

a. Tur/tle

b. Ca/ble

c. This/tle

d. Bi/cy/cle

11. When a word or syllable ends in AL or EL, usually these letters form the LAST syllable:

a. Cam/el

b. Jew/el

12. When ed comes at the end of a word, it adds a syllable ONLY when preceded by D or T:

a. Taunt/ed

b. Land/ed

c. Sport/ed

Rules for syllable Division

1. Determine and mark the vowels.

2. Determine and mark the consonants between the vowels.

3. Determine the syllable pattern and divide accordingly.

4. Pronounce the word by syllables.

5. Do you know the word?

6. Have you divided it correctly, OR are there other possibilities?

7. If YES, start over again.
