Qualitative Research: Synopsis and Reflection

TASK: Use this sheet to review a piece of qualitative research. This research may relate to your current PPD4 essay, 3rd year dissertation or wider studio practice and concerns. Aim to generate an overall reflection of 250 words minimum. Please include a copy of the published research/article in PPD4 file.

|To see how people between the age of 11-18 use YouTube and if it could be used as an educational tool. First questions are asked in general about how they use |

|YouTube but open ended questions are asked about what they thought about the educational video they were shown in regards to positives and negatives. |

|Methodology/Data Collection: What research methods were used to gather data? Why was it done in a particular way? Consider when, how and by whom was data gathered? |

|They created a marketing research video about health and safety to see how youths would react to information presented in this way. |

|Variables: Were any factors identified by the researcher from the outset that may distort the data gathered, and therefore have to be controlled? How was this |

|achieved? |

|The video shown influenced the questions and answers because it was a field specific research task. |

|Researcher Bias: Who conducted the research and did this affect the results in any unforeseen or unacknowledged manner by the researcher? Consider gender, ethnicity,|

|class etc. |

|Force 7 is an agency that create conversation between brands and younger generations through market research. |

|In this study a wide range of people of equal number of gender, a variation of ages and different locations. |

|Validity & Limitations: Did the study measure accurately what it was meant to measure? What factors might limit the extent to which the research can be considered |

|rigorous? Can the research be usefully and appropriately generalised and applied to other people, or situations, or to other times? |

|Some of the study is general and can be applied to other studies that look at the ways in which young people use YouTube. Some questions were specifically asked |

|about the video which would limit the study. |

|Application to Study: Do you imagine that this research could be of any direct use to CATS work, studio practice or 3rd year dissertation? |

|Yes in terms of highlighting how I could go about setting up a study i.e. creating a video. |

|It is also relevant to how a technological era are being educated which is relevant to the CATS study. |
