GPS-X software Quick Start - University of Waterloo

GPS-X 4.1 software Quick Start

1. For Civil Engineering students, GPS-X 4.1 can be accessed from any Engineering Nexus computer at:

Start menu-->Programs-->Civil Engineering-->GPS-X 4.1-->GPS-X 4.1

For Environmental Engineering students, you need to run the following file to make the Civil Engineering menu show in your start menu:

Q:\eng\civ\etc\make_me_civil.cmd

2. When you launch GPS-X 4.1, some library files will be automatically copied to c:\temp subdirectory. This would take a few minutes.

3. After the GPS-X window opened, choose the right default library (case dependent) in ‘c:\temp’ from the Options > Preferences submenu of the Options menu.

For example, the default Carbon-Nitrogen-Phosphorus Library should be c:\temp\cnplib

4. In the same submenu, choose a default directory. The default directory is used for saving and reading your files during the modelling, so it must be a r/w space (For example: N: drive, C:\temp\your username ). When you choose C:\temp\your username, remember that C:\temp is a temporary space. So you must copy your files to other places before you log off your computer.

5. Please confirm that double precision is enabled (Options->Preferences->Build->Precision).

6. To quick start to use GPS-X, you are strongly recommended to read ‘A Quick Introduction to GPS-X’ (Help Menu> Manuals > Quick Intro Guide), then follow the Tutorial 1 and 2 step by step (Tutorials can be found in Help Menu> Manuals > Tutorial Guide).

Note: If you want to run the provided tutorial files directly, you can copy one tutorial subdirectory from Q:\eng\civ\gps-x412\layouts\tutorials into N: drive or C:\temp\your username. Then open the files from there.

7. Useful link:

Online flash demos of the GPS-X software that include full audio narration and cover such topics as using GPS-X to assess aeration cost savings, estimating operating costs for phosphorous removal with GPS-X, building a plant model with GPS-X, and others.
