Trip to New Hampshire - Tracey Dodds

Trip to New Hampshire

Day 1 – We flew from Long Beach to Boston. The only glitch was at our layover at JFK Airport. We had to wait on the plane for an hour while the TSA had Jet Blue unload the luggage that was transferred from a Nassau flight and had it sent back through the luggage screeners. Stayed at the Embassy Suites at the Logan Airport.

Day 2 – Took a walk around the historic sites in Boston near the Boston Commons. After a couple of hours, drove to our hotel in New Hampshire – Crotched Mountain Resort & Spa. The directions provided by the resort took us through a lot of 2-lane roads. The resort is co-located with a golf course. The resort was recently purchased by Shell Vacations and they are busy renovating the resort. We have a two bed room suite. The resort is actually located in Francestown. Francestown has a little market where we could buy food and cleaning supplies, but not much else. The market is about 4 miles from our resort.

Day 3 – Drove around the local area. Visited little towns of Greenfield & Bennington and the slightly larger towns of Jaffrey and Peterborough. Eventually got to Mt. Monadnock St. Park. Took a short walk to a waterfall. Went shopping for groceries in Peterborough on the way back to the resort. We also shopped at the local book store. Peterborough is about 10 miles away and Mt. Monadnock State Park is another 10 miles past Peterborough. We ate at the resort restaurant. The food is really good there.

Day 4 – Sam played golf while Tracey and Madelynn took a long walk on the resort property. The resort owns a great deal of land through which they have cut cross country skiing trails. In the summer, the trails serve as hiking trails. The golf course has a couple of holes with gorgeous views of the Mt. Crotched Ski Resort. Our resort has a lot of undeveloped land with trails through it. We ate at Alberto’s Italian Restaurant in Greenfield. The food was great.

Day 5 – Went to Mt. Monadnock St. Park. We tried to hike the entire trail to the summit (about 3100 feet). It is a climb of about 1500 feet. Madelynn lead the hike. We started up White Dot Trail to White Cross Trail. We got about ½ way up and realized that Madelynn would have all sorts of trouble getting back down if we climbed any higher. The trail is basically over large rocks. So we declared the intersection of the White Cross Trail and Spruce Cutoff to be the summit and proceeded down the hill. Even the White Dot trail which the park rangers said would be easiest looked too hard for Madelynn. We then came down the Spruce Cutoff. We then came down a hiked about 1.5 miles on the more level Parker Trail. Madelynn did a great job as the hike leader. On the way back we stopped for lunch at this quaint little country store.

Day 6 – Drove to northern New Hampshire through the White Mountains. Saw the flume at Franconia Notch State Park. It was worth the 2 mile walk. We also came across a covered bridge during this hike. We then drove to North Conway. We unexpectedly came across an LL Bean Outlet Store. We stopped to shop there. We ate dinner in North Conway. Tracey finally had her lobster dinner. We finally got home at 10:00 PM. Madelynn stayed awake the entire time.

Day 7 – The day was rainy. In the afternoon we went to Friendly Farm. Madelynn pet and fed chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, a baby goat, piglets, and a baby cow. She really had fun here.

Day 8 – We went to Ruggles Mine. In the mine we were allowed to pick up rocks and minerals. We gathered quartz, beryl, mica, and feldspar. There was mica all over the mine. It was a very interesting experience.

Day 9 – Drove to Logan Airport. Stopped at Friendly’s to eat lunch. There was a lot of construction going on in Boston, so we had to take a detour through Chelsea.
