INDEPENDENT READING ASSIGNMENT
Third Quarter Theme
DUE FRIDAY, May 11th 15 points
THEME: The theme of a book is the central message the author wants you to learn from his or her book. It is usually a general statement about life or people. The theme is NOT a summary.
Directions: Think about your first, second OR third quarter book. Figure out what the THEME (message) the author wanted you to learn is. Think about what characters said, did, learned, etc. to help you figure out the theme. Next, on the attached index card:
1. Write the theme of the book in a complete sentence.
2. Explain how you know; provide evidence (characters’ thoughts, words, actions, etc.) from the book (at least three sentences).
You may type this assignment if you want, but your print out MUST be the same size as the index card and glued to the index card.
Use the following format for your index card. NEATNESS COUNTS!
