PDF Bus Discipline Philosophy and Consequences

1 Vidor Independent School District BUS DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY AND CONSEQUENCES

It is the intent of the Vidor Independent School District to provide bus transportation services to all students that qualify and want to ride the school bus to and from school.

Safety of the students depends on the behavior of the bus riders. A well behaved bus is a safe bus.

Procedures Vidor ISD Bus Drivers follow:

The driver is responsible for discipline on the school bus in order to insure the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle.

When a student misbehaves, and refuses to follow the rules posted on the bus, and will not follow the drivers' instruction a Level II bus referral will be written for JH and HS. A Level 1 is written for Elementary and Middle School Students.

Before a Level II bus referral is written the driver has verbally warned the student three times, moved the student to a front seat, explained to the student the danger of their action. The report is given to student the first available day (the next time they ride in the AM, the student is told the referral must be taken care of by the principal or they cannot ride the bus. If the student rides only in the afternoon, the referral is taken to the campus, the student can ride the bus that afternoon if they do not have it signed because it was not put in their hand, at that time they are told they can ride the bus AM if necessary but cannot ride the bus in the afternoon unless the referral has been handled by the Principal. Referrals are not given on Friday afternoon or before a holiday. If the referral is a fight or sexual, transportation will take the referral to the principal.) It is the student's responsibility to take the referral to their grade level principal, so discipline can be handled. The grade level principal will follow the punishment outlined in Bus Rider Contract pages 6, 7, and 8, also on page 3 of BUS DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY, sign the bus referral. The student is responsible for giving the pink copy of the referral to the driver, if a copy of the bus referral is not given to the driver, the student CANNOT ride the school bus. The student is responsible for carrying the yellow copy home for parent signature. If their grade level principal is not available they must see a principal that is on duty. If for some reason the student cannot get the bus referral signed the same day, the student is required to bring a note from the grade level principal or authorized personnel to allow the student to ride the bus home and to school the following day. Notes are only good for one time. If the student does not have a copy of the bus referral they will not ride the bus again with a note.

When a driver takes an item from a student, the driver may return the item to the student when they get off the bus. Under some circumstances the driver will bring the item to transportation and it can be picked up by the parent.

DISCIPLINE: The school bus is an extension of the classroom. All rules that apply in the classroom carry over to the bus. The discipline will be administered by the grade level principal. All school board policies that apply to student conduct and other student related activities apply to the school bus. If a student is corrected several times during the bus ride, they will be assigned to a seat near the front. If the students' behavior does not improve a LEVEL 1, for Elementary and Middle School students only, will be written, a copy will be sent home and a copy will be sent to the Principal. The driver may call the parent before the level 1 is written to see if that will take care of the problem.

2

LEVEL 1: discipline reports are a warning to the student, Elementary and Middle School only. A copy is sent home to the parent to let the parent know about the misbehavior. The parent needs to sign the Level 1 and have the student return the signed copy to the bus driver. A copy is sent to the campus principal to inform them of the warning and misbehavior.

A Level 1 discipline referral does not suspend the student from the bus. It is a warning and a request for the parent to intervene and speak to their student about their behavior.

IF student behavior does not improve, a LEVEL II referral will be written and the student will be sent to their campus principal for discipline action.

THE STUDENT IS SUSPENDED FROM RIDING THE BUS WHEN A LEVEL II DISCIPLINE REPORT IS ISSUED TO THEM. THEY ARE SUSPENDED FROM THE BUS UNTIL THEY HAVE REPORTED TO THEIR CAMPUS PRINCIPAL AND TAKEN CARE OF THE LEVEL II DISCIPLINE REPORT. WHEN A STUDENT IS SUSPENDED FROM ONE SCHOOL BUS, THEY ARE SUSPENDED FROM ALL OTHER SCHOOL BUSES AS WELL. A SCHOOL BUS SUSPENSION IS NOT AN EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL. STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO BE AT SCHOOL EACH DAY OF THEIR BUS SUSPENSION. WHILE SUSPENDED IT IS THE PARENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR THE STUDENT.

What are Disruptive Behavior Referrals:

Level 1: Poor behavior that continues after verbal warnings (Elementary and Middle School only.)

Level II:

Failure to follow posted bus rules: 1. Obey ALL directives of the driver 2. Observe same conduct as in the classroom 3. Be courteous, use no profane language 4. Do Not eat or drink on the bus (water OK, only because of heat) 5. Keep the bus clean, DO NOT LITTER 6. Tobacco products are prohibited, so are matches and lighters 7. DO NOT be destructive, VANDALISM 8. Stay in your seat, face the front, feet on the floor, bottom on seat 9. Keep body parts and/or other items inside the bus 10. The bus driver is authorized to assign seats 11. DO NOT have school supplies or sharp objects out

THE SCHOOL BUS IS NOT A GOOD ENVIORMENT TO DO HOMEWORK.
