“ANOTHER GOSPEL?"
GALATIANS 1:3-10
READ AS TEXT: Galatians 1:6-9
INTRO: Has anyone ever told you it doesn't matter what church you are
affiliated with because we are all the same working for place? I want
to say this morning that I am not working to get anywhere! My
account was settled long ago! In August of 1971, my eternal destiny
was settled forever and it cannot be changed! 1 Peter 1:3-5 tells us, "
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which
according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively
hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an
inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away,
reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through
faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." Each one of
us, that are saved, are safe in God's hand kept by His mighty power!
Now, as far as it doesn't matter what Church you belong to, I take
offense with that also! There are many out there which call themselves
"churches" which are not preaching the Gospel, but "another" Gospel!
They try to say you must have faith and works both. But Paul makes
it clear in Romans 3, that the doing of works can save no one or
justify no one before God! V20 says, "…by the deeds of the law there
shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of
sin.” He goes on to tell us we are justified by grace through faith in
Christ! He finishes his argument in v28, where he declares, "…we
conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."
Faith and work cannot stand together and bring justification, but
works naturally complement faith! (James 2:20).
Paul addresses a similar problem in the Galatian letter. There were
those who taught that faith and works are both essential to Salvation.
They were proclaiming "another" Gospel, which was not "another",
according to Paul, but was a perversion of the true! We must ever
beware of men who "appear as angels of light, for Satan himself is
transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). There are
three things I want you to note with me:
(1) WHAT THE GOSPEL IS
GALATIANS 1:3-5—“Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and
from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he
might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of
God and our Father: To whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
A. THE ESSENCE OF THE GOSPEL. The word “essence” means “the
distinctive quality of something. A real or true substance.” (Funk & Wagnall’s
Standard Desk Dictionary. Volume 1, A-M. p. 217). What is the essence of
the true Gospel? Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4—“For I delivered unto
you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again
the third day according to the Scriptures.” The true Gospel focuses all its
attention on Christ, not on men themselves (Isaiah 53:5-6)!
B. THE EFFECT OF THE GOSPEL. The Gospel does three things:
➢ Exalts The Person Of Jesus Christ (v3) (Philippians 2:5-11).
➢ Exhibits The Price Paid For Our Redemption (v4a) (1 Peter 1:18-19; 2:24).
➢ Extends The Purpose Of Our Salvation (v4b). The Gospel offers:
1) Forgiveness (v3)--Grace & Peace (Ephesians 1:7). God’s peace
can never be enjoyed where God's grace has not been
received! (Romans 5:1).
ILLUS: Dale Carnegie knew the techniques for "positive thinking"
and “self-confidence.” He could even teach people to
overcome worry with his techniques, but in the end,
peace eluded him and he committed suicide. In a world
filled with worry and anxiety, we need something tougher
than "positive thinking" or even "possibility thinking," We
need the peace of God standing guard over our hearts
and minds. --Jerry W. McGant (Albert M. Wells, Jr.
Inspiring Quotations-Contemporary & Classical. p. 151).
Isaiah 26:3 encourages us—“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,
whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
2) Freedom (v4b). Romans 8:1-4 tells us—“There is therefore now
no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in
Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For
what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh,
God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit.” This FREEDOM we enjoy because the Gospel is two-fold:
➢ Present Deliverance-From evil tendencies and characteristics of this world (Romans 6:6—“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15)!
➢ Future Deliverance-Out of this world when He comes for us (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18; 5:9)!
We have looked at WHAT THE GOSPEL IS but let us also see…
(2) WHAT THE GOSPEL IS NOT
GALATIANS 1:6-9—“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that
called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not
another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the
gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach
any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto
you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if
any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have
received, let him be accursed.”
*This “another gospel” is:
A. A DIFFERENT MESSAGE. It is amazing to see those who have "tasted the
heavenly gift" and experience the grace of God being led astray by erroneous
teaching which can never satisfy! But God in His WORD said it would be
so! (1 Timothy 4:1-2). NO sharper rebuke can be found in Pauline writing
(Lehman Strauss. Galatians & Ephesians. p. 18) than this found in these
verses! Paul is amazed that the Galatians are so soon removed (the word in
the Greek implies “to be in the act of turning) from the grace of Christ to
another Gospel (v6)! Paul had preached grace through faith unto them,
which they had accepted, but were now turning to embrace faith plus
works! Paul uses the word "another" twice in these verses 6 and 7. Each
occurrence has a different meaning! The first means in the Greek "another
of a different kind or quality." The second means "another of the same kind
or quality." (Lehman Strauss. Galatians & Ephesians. p. 22). The point Paul
was making is this-the false teaching at Galatia was a different Gospel, not
the same as Paul preached-which is grace and grace alone! (John 1:17;
Acts 4:12).
B. THE DOCTRINE OF MAN. It is evident that this “another gospel” did not
come from the mind of God but the mind of man. It is the doctrine of man.
How do we know? Because it in direct opposition to everything the true
Gospel stands for. This doctrine of man:
➢ Exalts The Person Of Man (Proverbs 14:12). It declares that man is inherently good. That within man is the potential to be righteous! This is Satan's greatest lie! (Romans 3:10, 23; Romans 7:18; Isaiah 64:6).
➢ Exchanges Work For Grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). Paul wrote in Romans 4:3-5—“For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” ; and in Romans 11:6—And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” The salvation of the gospel is by grace, that is, it is the gift which springs from the love of God. If that be true, it is not to be earned by the works of the Jewish law. Paul is very emphatic is showing that the Jewish Christians were saved, not because they deserved it on account of keeping the law blameless, but because they accepted the offered mercy of God. (B. W. Johnson. The People’s New Testament. e-Sword. Version 7.7.0. Copyright 2000-2005. Rick Meyers. All Rights Reserved Worldwide).
➢ Enslaves Men To Its Principles (Galatians 5:1; John 8:36). Paul says that those teaching "another" gospel only do two things: (1) They trouble-the word in the Greek means "cause perplexity, confusion, and unrest. 1 Corinthians 14:33—“God is not the author of Confusion, but of peace...". (2) Pervert-the word in the Greek means "to turn about, to change into an opposite character." This can be done by adding to or taking away from the Gospel message. The Gospel is complete as it is! Nothing must be added to it or taken from it (Ecclesiastes 3:14)! The consequences of this are found in vv. 8-9.
C. A DOOMED MESSAGE. Those who preach "another" gospel, according to
Paul "let him be accursed”. The word “accursed” is translated from the
Greek word Anathema that means "placed under a curse or devoted to
destruction." The word originally referred to animals who were doomed to
die as a sacrifice. Here it means, "let the curse of God be on him!" Or in our
present language, "Let him be damned!” Those who have "perverted" the
Gospel message and lead literally thousands astray have much to answer
for when they stand before Almighty God!
We have looked at WHAT THE GOSPEL IS, WHAT THE GOSPEL IS NOT, finally let us see…
(3) WHAT THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL DOES
GALATIANS 1:10—“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to
please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of
Christ.”
A. IT PLEASES GOD (vlO). The “another” gospel, mentioned by Paul in vv. 6-
9, pleases men, but the true Gospel pleases God! Paul wrote in 1
Corinthians 1:18, 21—“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God…For after that
in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by
the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” But the world today
would rather hear smooth preaching than Gospel preaching! (2 Timothy
4:2-4).
B. IT DISPLAYS GOD'S POWER (Romans 1:16). Every time some sin-sick
soul receives forgiveness and is saved, God's mercy is seen and His power
displayed!
C. IT EXALTS GOD’S NATURE (Romans 1:17). Our God is a righteous God
and all He does is righteous (Psalm 145:17)!
D. IT CONVICTS MAN'S MIND, HEART, AND SOUL AND CALLS FOR
REPENTANCE (Acts 2:22-24, 32-38). The mind, heart, and soul of man
must be convicted before repentance can occur (John 3:8)! And friends,
repentance is essential! Jesus said so (Luke 13:5)! It is then true faith
which must follow! (Romans 10:9-10, 13).
CLOSING: V4 gives us the essence of the Gospel—“Himself for our sins.” This
is the Gospel message! And there is no other! There is not
“another” gospel! Someone has said, “"If you believe what you like
in the Gospel, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the Gospel
you believe, but yourself." (Bible Illustrator For Windows. Version

store in Bronxville, New York looking for something to relieve her
pain. She bought a bottle of medicine, not knowing that someone
had opened the bottle's tamper-resistant wrapping, tainted the
capsules with cyanide, and returned them to the store's shelf.
Within a short time after Elsroth left the store, the cyanide-laced
capsules killed her.
Like a medicine mixed with cyanide, a perverted gospel has the
power to kill rather than make whole.
Friend, Have you by faith received the Gospel as the remedy for
your sins? I’m talking about the true gospel—Christ crucified,
buried, and risen again. I’m talking about receiving God’s gift by
faith apart from works. I’m talking about believing in Jesus Christ
as the only way to Heaven.
Christian Friend, are you spreading the Gospel to others?
