Existing initiatives for the international marketing of Moringa leaves in their various forms

Existing initiatives for the international marketing of Moringa leaves as food supplements currently only concerns sale on the Internet. On some sites, the following mention appears at the bottom of the screen: “Statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). DISCLAIMER: This product has no approved therapeutic claims. It is not used to diagnose, treat or improve any illness and replace medications. Always consult a qualified health professional when asking for any nutritional supplements.” No product consisting of Moringa leaves has yet received authorisation for sale on the market in Europe or the USA.

China

The on-line directory of Chinese health food suppliers quotes the Taiwaneese company Jaw Der Develop Co Ltd., which sells Moringa leaf powder (also called Moringa tea, to mix with water or milk) and Moringa leaf capsules. The capsules are sold as a food supplement and as an energy booster. The tea is recomended for children less than 10 years old and elderly people, more generally for people having difficulties in having sufficient food intakes, in particular as a source of calcium.

The directory has a page dedicated to Moringa products providers. Among those, some sell processed fruits (in powder) or seeds. We have only selected those which sell leaf products.

Himalaya Herbal Healthcare is an Indian company created in 1930 and that went through a great development. It now has its headquarters in Bangalore, India, and offices in the USA, Europe, Singapour, Caïman Islands and in the United Arab Emirates. Its products are distributed in 60 countries, and the company has numerous shops in India.

This company sells four products including parts of Moringa: a massage oil, a drug for joints, an immune booster and two veterinarian products. The two health products for humans are presented in capsules or tablets, in white plastic jars. Moringa leaves are only a small component of one of the two products, the Septilin, sold as an immune booster and anti-inflammatory. Its price is 11$ per jar of 60 tablets. In the other product, the part of the Moringa plant which is used is not indicated.

This Philippine-American company sells tablets made of seven « bitter herbs » including Moringa oleifera. The commercial name is ABS bitter herbs. The product is packaged in transparent plastic jars, and is sold as an immune booster, a toxin purifier, and a body balance enhancer. A message from the Food and Drug Administration is printed at the bottom of the site’s pages to inform buyers that the therapeutically qualities of the product have not been evaluated by the FDA.

Moringa is presented as « one of the healthiest vegetables of the Philippines », and as a rich source of iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins A,B,C, carbohydrates, fibres and proteins.

Specifically sold as an immune booster, this Moringa is presented as cultivated in the United States. The product is sold as capsules or in powder, the two forms being 100% dried leaf powder. The capsules are also presented (in another part of the site) as a source of energy and endurance, while the powder is announced as a Moringa tea.

Zija International Inc from Utah, USA, launched the Moringa drink ZijaTM on the Internet market at the beginning of 2005. The product is sold by a network of online resellers paid on a commission basis for their sales and recruiting of new resellers.

The drink is sold in small aluminium cans of daily doses of 167 ml.

The drink is made up of various parts of the Moringa plant, and is sold for its nutritional qualities, especially its essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

The company published a book on the nutritional interest of Moringa signed by an American scientist (not a Moringa specialist but a pharmaceutical doctor). The book is entitled “Miracle Tree”, like the one published by the Church World Service American NGO. Zija also organized a two-day conference, on 17 and 18 September 2005, on the rediscovery of Moringa by Zija. More generally, the company is trying to claim its legitimacy by playing on the image of scientific documents and recognized NGOs.

Zija is the first company to launch a food supplement on the western market with aggressive marketing, and it will be interesting to see if it opens the path to more conventional sales in retail stores.

This company specialises in alternative medicines using magnetism. It sells just one food product, a drink containing (among others) Moringa juice, which is proclaimed as “an exciting new ingredient from the tropics”. Moringa juice is presented as being rich in calcium, vitamin C, potassium and iron.

The product is sold in an opaque plastic 500ml bottle for £ 24.95.

This product is sold to alleviate mineral deficiency “which can explain almost all illnesses” (quote) and to strengthen the immune system. The liquid form is presented as being easier to assimilate than the tablet form.

Conclusion

Internet sales are little regulated if at all and it is difficult to know if these companies sell reliable products (whether composition complies with what is announced). It is even harder to know if these products are really sold in any quantity. However, most new food supplements entered the market this way and by pyramid sales, to then penetrate the conventional market. It is interesting to see the advance the Indians have taken; they know Moringa well and already use the powder of the fruit in the agrifood industry (curry powders, aromas).
