Finding Mean, Median, Mode and Range

Finding Mean, Median, Mode and Range

Mean: This is often called the average.

STEPS:

1. Add all of the numbers.

2. Divide the sum by the number of data

Example:

For eight days in a row Geneva recorded the following number of visitors to the school website.

4, 2, 8, 4, 6, 9, 10, 5

1. Add all of the numbers.

2. Divide the sum by the number of data.

Mean ___________

Median: This is the middle number.

STEPS:

1. Order the numbers from smallest to greatest.

2. Cross out the first and last number until you find the middle.

3. If there are two numbers in the middle, find the mean of those.

Example:

For eight days in a row Geneva recorded the following number of visitors to the school website.

4, 2, 8, 4, 6, 9, 10, 5

1. Order the numbers from smallest to greatest.

2. Cross out the first and last number until you find the middle.

3. If there are two numbers in the middle, find the mean of those.

Median _____________

Mode: The number that occurs the most.

If all the numbers occur the same amount of time, there is no mode.

If two or more numbers occur more than the others, the same amount of time, they can all be the mode.

Example:

For eight days in a row Geneva recorded the following number of visitors to the school website.

4, 2, 8, 4, 6, 9, 10, 5

Which number occurs the most?

Mode ____________

Range: The difference between the largest and smallest numbers.

Example:

For eight days in a row Geneva recorded the following number of visitors to the school website.

4, 2, 8, 4, 6, 9, 10, 5

Practice:

Use the following data set to find mean, median, mode and range.

12, 17, 20, 17, 13, 13
