When dealing with word choice questions, you should always quote the word, before going on to explain its connotations.
“QUOTE” suggests EXPLANATION
1. “The creature was thin and bedraggled with unkempt fur and dirty paws. It looked dolefully out from glassy eyes and panted desperately for breath.”
