How to write your philosophy of education

Philosophy of Education

Student Assignment

Your own philosophy of education is very important because it provides focus and emphasis for your teaching. Working to communicate your philosophy helps you to become aware of your own goals and values, which prepares you to integrate them with the goals and values directed by your school district and your community.

Your statement of philosophy is a description of your own goals and beliefs as a teacher. There is no “right” philosophy. Some fit into certain settings better than others. You will refine and develop your philosophy for the rest of your career. As you think about your beliefs and develop your position, consider what you have learned about yourself this year, in your internship and as a student. How have your thoughts about teaching, the educational system, schools, societal responsibility, parental involvement, and learning changed/developed/evolved?

Assignment:

Imagine that you are a principal of a brand-new school. You want to hire educators whose philosophies either reflect your own or are compatible with yours. What teacher qualities will you look for? What will you offer for parents/students, etc.? Use the bulleted items to guide you as you develop your thoughts. You may write a poem, develop a collage, write a newsletter, or make a brochure that helps you to illustrate your perspective on education. Remember, you are writing from the perspective of a principal.

• What is the purpose of education in the United States? In your school?

• What do you want your future students to be able to do or be as a result of their experiences in your school? Why?

• What kinds of teaching approaches and strategies will most likely help your students meet these goals?

• What is the student’s role? (What are students’ responsibilities?)

• What is the teacher’s role in the classroom?

• What is the teacher’s role in working with parents and as a bridge to the community?

• What is the teacher’s role in educational reform?

** Your CLAIM can be the answer to any of the above questions - then the SUPPORT - to your claim will be evidence from Internet, class notes, textbook , etc. – EXPLAIN will be examples from your internship site backing up the research (support) and to prove your claim.

This statement of philosophy should rely on your personal beliefs and experiences. The knowledge and experience you acquire as you proceed in your education and career will influence your philosophy.
