PACIFIC SLOPE CONSORTIUM

Social Studies 10 Name/Date:

GREAT MAP OF CANADA

Goal: Build a historical map that shows some major events in the creation of Canada during the 1800s

Things to include:

• title, key, student info, direction indicator, other common map elements (refer to your Mapping Basics from the beginning of the course)

• labels key geographic features such as rivers, lakes and mountains (decide which ones by thinking which provided transportation, geographical reference and/or influence key events in building of Canada

• Label the provinces/Territories and the capital cities. Indicate the date each area joined Confederation.

• minimum of ten events (big box at bottom) you think were important in the history of Canada from 1812-1885 (e.g. Red River Rebellion, Rebellions of 1837, start or completion of the CPR)

• five focus areas (5 big boxes) where you can draw and write about some of the events, people or policies that were significant in creating Canada in greater detail. If appropriate connect them to the location in which they happened with an arrow -- hand drawn is best, but you could use printed material could be an option

• 3 of your five boxes should focus on an aspect of the Red River Rebellion, the Northwest Rebellion, and the Canadian Pacific Railway -- details on a specific event, or something interesting you turn up in research

• Add specific details to your map that you think are significant to the creation of Canada such as the route of the CPR, or show fur trading areas, etc.
