What Athletes Are Made Of by Hanoch Piven. Illustrated by Hanoch Piven. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2006.

ANNOTATION:

This piece of nonfiction lets the reader in on a variety of qualities that constitute an athlete. Using Jesse Owens, the runner, as an example of get up and go or Wayne Gretzky as an example of brains over brawn, Piven also delightfully illustrates with the use portraits made from everyday objects.

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS:

1. What are athletic qualities?

2. What qualities do you have in common with these athletes?

3. What makes great athletes different from not-so-great ones?

4. Are athletes born with these qualities or do they work for them?

5. Which of these athletes would you be like the most?

6. Can you think of anybody who is not an athlete that has any of these qualities?

Activity:

Students may create their own art work of a favorite athlete and describe which quality they feel the athlete best has. If the student is not into sports then they may use another public figure (dancer, artist, or public leader) that they think has the qualities described.
