Choose a novel or short story which has an effective opening or conclusion. With reference to appropriate techniques, explain why the opening or conclusion is effective and discuss how it adds to your appreciation of the text as a wholeA short story that has an effective conclusion?is 'The Telegram' by Iain Crichton Smith.? ‘The Telegram’ is about two women: a fat woman and a thin woman who are watching the approach of the elder with a telegram and worrying that it brings news of the death of their sons. At the end it is revealed that it was in fact the elder’s son who had died and he keeps walking out of the village as he struggles to find a way to deal with this traumatic news.?In order to analyse how Crichton Smith?makes the conclusion effective?the techniques of?characterisation, word choice and imagery will be analysed. ?One way that the conclusion is effective is through the revelation that the telegram holds the news that the elder’s son is dead. This is shown through: “His walk through the village was a somnambulistic wandering” This phrase means that he kept walking past the final house. The use of the metaphor “somnambulistic wandering” compares the elder’s journey to sleepwalking. Just as the sleepwalk means that someone is moving around without awareness of the world around them so too the elder is in a trance due to the impact of the news in the telegram. ?Furthermore, through the word choice of “wandering” Crichton Smith suggests connotations of a slow movement, meandering and without a purpose as he feels due to the death of his son that his life has lost all purpose.? Consequently, this makes the conclusion effective as the whole story is centred around the telegram and the fear of what it contains, but through the reference to the elder an effective resolution to the plot is created.?Additionally through this description the reader develops a greater appreciation for the text as it rounds off the story for the women and creates an unexpected ending because just like the women, the reader expects the telegram to be delivered to one of the houses in the village. ?Another way Crichton Smith creates an effective conclusion is through the relationship between the fat woman and the thin woman.? This is illustrated by the fat woman’s belief that: “It was as if she had an extra vision, as if the air itself brought the past with all its details nearer.” The use of the word?choice?“extra vision”?suggests …………………………………..…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Furthermore through the use of the personification of “the air itself brought the past with all its details nearer” Crichton Smith compares ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… This highlights that …………………………………………………….………..……………………………………………………………………………………………….?This creates an effective conclusion because ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
