Activity 1.1.2 Design Principles and Elements

Activity 1.1.2 Design Principles and Elements41529003175000IntroductionHave you ever noticed how buildings of similar size and shape can have completely different visual effects? Architects, like artists, must understand the elements and principles of design and how they affect the visual impact of the building on a viewer. Whether it is the intent of the architect to create a feeling of strength and stability or to create an unusual form that will elicit a double-take from the public, the elements and principles of design can be used to manipulate the intellectual and emotional reactions of the people who see and use the building.Equipment Principles and Elements of Design Applied to Architecture presentation notesProcedureIn this activity you will identify design elements and principles as they pertain to images of structures. For each of the following, choose one element of design and one principle of design that you feel is most prominent in the image and then justify your choice.Word BankBalanceFormRhythmTextureColorLineShapeUnityEmphasisProportion/ScaleSpaceValuePrinciple of Design_____symmetrical/formal balance____Justification: Both sides have about equal amount of design that is similar to the other side.EmphasisUnityElement of Design _____texture______Justification: The texture is rough. The bricks create a rough texture. Principle of Design_____emphasis_______Justification: There is a huge circle design in the middle of the building that is the focal point of the building. Radial and symmetrical balanceUnityElement of Design__horizontal line___Justification: The building is very horizontal in its shape. There are even horizontal lines outlining the building. Shape Principle of Design_____rhythm_______Justification: There is repetition of the same square window portions of the building.ContrastVertical balanceElement of Design______value______Justification: Part of the building is a light gray while the other half is a dark gray. Vertical lineSmooth texture Principle of Design_____rhythm____Justification: The building has all its windows at the same size repeating.Symmetrical balanceElement of Design___veritcal lines____Justification: The building is straight and tall, showing vertical lines within its design.Space 36195-1270000 Principle of Design_____movement_____Justification: There is an indention that makes a path and creates a sense of movement within the building. Unity Element of Design______form_______Justification: The building indents to make a cool geometrical shape/design.Value Principle of Design_____emphasis______Justification: There is emphasis on the entrance because there is a border around it, plus it is black while the rest of the building is beige.Horizontal balanceContrast Element of Design____curved lines____Justification: There is a curved arch on the building. Shape Principle of Design____proportion_____Justification: There is a smaller building and a taller building and they look similar and proportional.Symmetrical balanceUnity Element of Design____vertical lines_____Justification: The building has a very tall design and vertical lines going through the building.Form Principle of Design__symmetrical balance_Justification: Both the left and right side of the building have the same design and there is an obvious middle that divides the two similar sides.Horizontal balanceemphasisElement of Design______color______Justification: Color is used in the painting.Curved lines Principle of Design_____contrast_____Justification: The building is white and very sleek yet the sign to the store is rustic and brown and rmal balanceRandom rhythmElement of Design_____vertical lines_____Justification: The building has vertical lines indented into it and it is tall. Also, the palm trees planted in front of it give it the feeling of being tall as well.Space Principle of Design__symmetrical balance_Justification: There are equal amount of arches on both sides of the monument. Proportion and scale Element of Design___curved lines___Justification: The arches create curved lines within the monument.Shape Rough texture ConclusionIn what way do certain elements or principles identify the time period in which a structure was created? Modern structures look more sleek, vertical and new in most cases while old buildings have a rougher texture and are shorter, they usually look older. What factors might account for an incorrect identification?A structure may have it’s own type of design that doesn’t clearly fit into a category so it may be identified as something it’s not because of uncertainty. Describe an example of a way that design principles and elements could impact the function of a building. They can impact the function of a building because by adding certain principles and elements they can make it so that different people can use the building. For example, someone may use horizontal lines instead of vertical lines for an elderly home because if a building is too tall, elderly can’t go up and down stairs so it would be unappealing for them to have a tall building. ................
