What makes something alive?

Observe the objects on the lab table. Is it alive? What makes you say so? Make a chart. Write down what you see and your observations. Why is it alive or not?

Biology: The study of life, living organisms, and their interactions with other organisms and the environment.

Characteristics of Living Things

made of cells use energy need water maintain homeostasis in a changing environment react and respond to changes in the environment get rid of wastes that they make (metabolic wastes) their cells contain DNA that can be passed on to the next generation reproduce Interact with and effect the environment and other organisms. populations of organisms change over time (evolve)

Life Processes Life processes are biological/cellular activities that maintain homeostasis, keep the organism alive and propagate the species.

The life processes are metabolism, nutrition, transport, cellular respiration, synthesis, excretion, regulation, growth & development and reproduction.

1. Metabolism includes all the chemical reactions that maintain

homeostasis. These metabolic (chemical) reactions occur in all

the other life processes.

Nutrition

O

The process of obtaining food and processing the food for use by the organism.

Two types:

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Consuming other organisms or pre-made organic molecules.

Steps: ingestion, digestion, absorption, egestion

Autotrophic Nutrition

Producing organic molecules from inorganic molecules

Photosynthesis uses energy from the sun.

Chemosynthesis uses energy from chemicals (other molecules)

Transport

Absorption of materials and movement of materials around inside a cell and inside and organism. Circulation or cyclosis.

O

Cellular Respiration

Releasing ENERGY from food for use by the organism or cell. Two types: Aerobic and anaerobic

O

Synthesis

The metabolic process that combines small molecules to build larger molecules.

Small molecules (monomers) are combined (bonded) to form larger molecules (macro molecules)

Small molecules

Complex molecules

Excretion

F

Getting rid of metabolic wastes
