Description of Positions

WELCOME!

WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE

Hello, and welcome to the Niemeyer and Calder Community! We are so excited to have you with us! This letter contains some necessary information you will find helpful as we begin the coming year.

Firstly, please mark your calendars with your specific move in day/time that was sent to you via email:

• Move-in days are August 23rd to August 27th

For move in, each student will receive a scheduled day and time to check-in. Housing Staff will be present to issue a brass key for Calder residents (apartment door and mailbox) and will encode student ID for Niemeyer residents as that will be your key into the building as well as your apartment. Niemeyer residents will also be given a brass key for their mailbox. Please make sure to have your student ID ready. To maintain the highest safety levels and to continue to practice social distancing, please limit the number of individuals helping you move in and wear a face covering.

For Niemeyer Residents: During move-in you will receive a move in packet that indicated a letter (A, B, C, or D) on the label. This indicated what room inside your unit is attached to your name. You will be responsible for any damages in this room at the end of the year.

ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY

Calder: Calder Living Center is our Art Housing, reserved for students in the various arts majors across campus. It is a small, 46-bed community of all single efficiency apartments. They have one Resident Assistant. While reserved for arts majors, it is not always filled completely with arts students so the population is an eclectic mix of returning, transfer, and occasionally first-year students.

Niemeyer: Niemeyer Living Center is our Honors Housing, reserved for students that are members of the Frederik Meijer Honors College. It is a large, 450-bed community of primarily 2- and 4-bedroom apartments and a handful of single efficiency apartments. There are 10 Resident Assistants, and students are an even mix of first-year and returning students, and are almost exclusively Honors students. They have an Honors-focused community council, which maintains close ties with both Honors and Housing.

RHA: The Residence Housing Association (RHA) is happy to welcome you to campus and we can’t wait to meet you.

RHA is a student organization within Housing & Residence Life which seeks to make Grand Valley feel like your home away from home. We offer unique programming opportunities, leadership development, student advocacy, and community service.  Meet other students and get to know your campus community by participating in incredible, unique, and free programs. If you are passionate or have interest in planning programs for you and the rest of the student body to enjoy, RHA is the place to be! We are excited to make new memories for our 2020-21 school year!

THE FIRST NIGHT

Opening Programs: Our RA housing team will be hosting a welcoming event in the first few days of your arrival on campus. We will be following all CDC guidelines to make sure the event, and future events, are as safe as possible. Please follow our Instagram page, join a floor GroupMe once you move in, or be on the lookout for additional information about Niemeyer/Calder events within the halls.

Virtual Floor Meetings: Typically, your RA team would facilitate a floor meeting on the first night. This year we will be introduction a new model for our floor meetings. There will be a self-serve module on Comevo, an online app for educational purposes, that you will be able to complete on your own. More information about the virtual floor meeting will come later from your RA or the Housing department.

MAIL & PACKAGES

Packages are delivered to the Ravines Package Center, and you will receive an email when they arrive. The Niemeyer Front Desk cannot accept or hold any packages. You can retrieve delivered paper mail in your mailbox near the first-floor entrance of your building using the follow addresses.
