Meagan McMahan1.1.6- Final ReportOne day, an outbreak happened at a college that led many students to the infirmary to get medical attention. Sue came in with a headache that wouldn’t go away and with a temperature of 100.6. Although she does admit to not getting much sleep and drinking a lot of energy drinks. Jill came in feeling run down, with many body aches, and a temperature of 99.7. She does say that she smokes some times and has a healthy drinking diet for the most part. Anthony has a dry cough, his sinus are worse than normal, has muscle ache and has had a fever of 100 the past few days. Wanda had a fever, glands in her neck were swollen, and a sore throat. Ray did not want to go to the infirmary but his girlfriend Wanda says they have the same symptoms. Maggie has a scratchy throat, woke up feeling like here throat was on fire, her head feels heavy, and has had hot and cold flashes. Maria has been feeling run down, can barely get out of bed, and has a fever of 103. Maria does admit to sharing a drink with Jill. Arnie has a cough, runny nose, and a fever of 100.5.After doing the ELISA test, it was gathered that Sue does have an antigen. Her number was 500ng/mL. Jill also had an antigen, she had 125ng/mL. Marco also had an antigen, he had 8ng/mL. Maria was just in the middle but still had an antigen present, she had a rate of 31ng/mL. Maggie and Anthony had no antigen. with a number of 0ng/mL. As referring to strong and weak infection it really just means that the weak had a very good antigen or many. The strong infections had no antigen. Once we had the ELISA testing done, we wanted to use the NCBI BLAST to diagnose what each patient had using there sequencing data given. It was known from the molecular testing that Sue, Jill, Marco, and Maria were all affected in some way by bacterial meningitis. Anthony and Arnie were both diagnosed with Influenza B Virus also known as a type of flu. Wanda and Alvin were both diagnosed with Human Herpesvirus also known as EBV Epstein-Barr. Maggie got dignosed with streptococcus pyogenes also known as strep. Though all of these are very serious you can treat each of them pretty easy. Anthony and Arnie can both be treated with Oral Oseltamivir (Tamiful) and Inhaled Zanamivir (Ralenza). Wanda and Alvin should be put on rest, fluids and over the counter medications. Sometimes depending on how serve the situation is they may need to have surgery. This could include Splenectomy and more medical imaging to diagnose this. Maggie can be treated with an antibiotic called GAS bacteria, cefdinir, or erythromycin. Sue, Jill, Marco, and Maria can get treated by antibiotics such as ampicillin, cefotaime, or gentamicin. This outbreak can be handled by everyone at the college being aware of what is going on. Second, people can get vaccinated against these outbreaks. Third, the college students can wash hands, and be cleaner. Although eating healthy and getting better sleep might not seem like it would help, it helps drastically. Also, keep active and do not eat or drink after another person. ? ................
