What’s in a name - msbeckleysblog

What’s in a name?

Prompt:

In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Juliet laments the fact that Romeo is a Montague and says that he would, “retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title.” (2.2.46-47) While it may be true that a rose would still smell sweet if it were called a skunk flower, the name a person has impacts his or her personality. We wouldn’t be the same if we had another name.

Our names have a lot to do with who we are.

Assignment:

How has your name shaped your personality? For instance, if your name is William but you’re called Billy, do you think that has anything to do with your maturity level? Would you behave differently if you were called William? Do you feel your name “fits” you, or is there another that would be better?

In addition to analyzing the impact of your name, research the origins and meaning of your name. How closely does your personality fit the meaning of your name?

Have fun with this, yet give it some serious thought.

Purpose:

Analyze a thing (your name)

Format:

Surprise me.

Audience:

Teacher, classmates, and your parents (they may be interested to know how the name they picked has influenced you!)

Evaluation:

You will be assessed in the knowledge and thinking and inquiry categories. A checklist will be provided.
